Merzig is blossoming: Edeka and Kaufland are opening in the Rieffstrasse revival!
Something is really happening in the local supply sector in Merzig! At an important meeting recently, the city council paved the way for the return of Kaufland and the establishment of a new Edeka store. This was decided at the meeting on Thursday, October 30, 2025, as the Saarbrücken newspaper reported.
The city council has specifically approved the development plan for the Edeka market at Rieffstrasse 5. This will be built on a brownfield site opposite the current Kaufland location and will offer a sales area of around 2,500 square meters. Construction work is scheduled for spring 2026, with a planned opening of the Edeka market in mid-2027. Another step in the right direction!
Strengthening the trading location
But that's not all: the city council also approved the changes to the development plan and a partial change to the land use plan for the Kaufland site on Vordere Rieffstrasse. These changes are the result of feedback from the public and those responsible for public affairs. Information about the revised plans can be viewed online, promoting transparency and engaging citizens.
The modernizations on Rieffstrasse are already gaining momentum, and not just with new Aldi and Lidl branches. The establishment of Edeka and the return of Kaufland are intended to meaningfully complement the existing offering in Merzig and strengthen the local economy. Mayor Marcus Hoffeld dares to make an optimistic forecast and emphasizes the advantages that these new markets will bring to citizens.
This will make Rieffstrasse a real central point for retail in Merzig, which should also promote competition among providers. At a time when high-quality local supplies are important to many, such developments are particularly encouraging. Construction work for Kaufland could also begin in 2026, meaning a new shopping paradise will soon be ready!
Things remain exciting in Merzig: the return of Kaufland coupled with the new Edeka offer promises good business for the citizens and lively structures in the city. Who knows what the next few months will bring – it’s definitely worth staying tuned!
