The number of Lyme disease cases in Saarland is increasing alarmingly!

In Saarland, the problem of Lyme disease has come into focus again this year. As of early August 2023, a total of 183 cases have been reported, an increase compared to the 163 cases last year. The numbers are particularly striking in the Saarlouis district, where 48 cases were registered, closely followed by Neunkirchen with 39 cases and St. Wendel with 36. 32 cases are also documented in the Saarpfalz district, while 21 cases were recorded in the Saarbrücken regional association and 7 in the Merzig-Wadern district.

However, according to the Saarland Ministry of Health, the number of cases is not complete because there is no uniform reporting requirement for Lyme disease in Germany. This uncertainty could lead to the actual number of cases being significantly higher. Symptoms of the disease are often non-specific and can lead to underdiagnosis. The ministry is already warning of a possible increase in cases in the second half of the year, based on historical trends that have shown strong fluctuations over the past five years - from just 48 cases in 2022 to 116 cases in the first half of 2020.

Dangers of Lyme disease

As the experts report, Lyme disease is transmitted through tick bites, and around a third of ticks in Germany can act as carriers of Borrelia. Symptoms range from a typical migrating flush that forms around the injection site to fever and headache. As a rule, early treatment with antibiotics is effective. In addition to Lyme disease, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), which is also transmitted by ticks, will also be an issue in the coming months. In Saarland, however, only the Saarpfalz district is classified as a risk area for TBE.

According to information from the Ministry of Health, citizens should observe some protective measures against tick bites. This includes avoiding tall grass and undergrowth, wearing long clothing and regularly checking your body after spending time outdoors. Ticks should always be removed as quickly as possible to avoid complications.
