New urban quarter on the Becolin site: hope for Saarbrücken?

In Saarbrücken, something is happening again on the former industrial site on Mainzer Straße at the Roman fort, which has been waiting for new development for years. The city's long-planned projects for a shopping center and a university have so far remained unfulfilled. Nevertheless, new ideas are now on the table that could breathe new life into the development of the area. Saarbrücken newspaper reports that investor Christian Ritter and Dieter Leismann, together with the city administration, are pushing to adapt the legal framework to enable sensible use of the site.

The goal is clear: the creation of an urban quarter in the so-called “New City East”, where living and working should find space in a harmonious coexistence. In order to create the necessary conditions, a noise report was drawn up and the city council has now changed the development plan. A further step towards the new use was the cancellation of the project-related development plan “Halberger Tor” from 2002, as the Saarbrücken newspaper reveals further.

New perspectives for the commercial area

The so-called Ostspange commercial area, the new focus of the city, has a lot of potential to offer. It impresses not only with its size, but also with its excellent accessibility - an aspect that is important for companies in the Saarbrücken Regional Association. The district has around 329,593 inhabitants and offers numerous attractive location options over an area of 410.95 km². With an employment rate of 52.8% and over 18,000 employees in the industry, the area is economically well positioned. This also includes numerous positions in trade and logistics that can be important for companies. Further information about the opportunities in the commercial area can be found on the website Commercial areas be obtained.

The city administration has also agreed that alternative usage concepts for the Becolin site will be examined. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether the necessary “target deviation process” can still be initiated in order to advance urban development aspirations. Mayor Uwe Conradt has repeatedly complained about the delays on the part of the Ministry of Construction that are hindering the implementation of the project.

Investors and the city are working together to finally bring the site back to life. There is great hope for progress in the area, and citizens can look forward to seeing which plans are now being implemented.
