Green sponsors and volunteers: Homburg's green heroes celebrated!

On July 2, 2025, a special reception took place in the Roman Museum's café in honor of the volunteer Green Sponsors of the city of Homburg. Despite a heavy downpour that delayed the start of the event, more than 40 committed citizens came together to be recognized for their tireless efforts. Mayor Manfred Rippel, who represented Mayor Michael Forster, praised the guests for their significant contribution to the well-being of the city and the general public. “Your commitment contributes significantly to the community and the positive perception of our city,” said Rippel during his speech, which was met with applause from those present.

The event was all about appreciation. Certificates and small gifts were waiting for the green sponsors and the gallery supervisors who work in the hall during the art exhibitions as thanks for their efforts. Associate Dr. Eric Governor presented the honor on behalf of Mayor Forster and emphasized that around 60 green sponsors, 10 gallery supervisors and 2 hiking trail supervisors are currently active in the city. “Your commitment not only protects our green spaces, but also promotes citizenship and community,” said Governor.

Diverse projects for a greener Homburg

The Green Sponsorship Campaign has been an integral part of the city's commitment since it was founded in 1995 by Mayor Reiner Ulmcke. The reason for the honor is various projects, including the fountain on Talstrasse, in which companies, groups and private individuals lend a hand together. “As a city, we have to set good examples,” said Rippel. In this sense, important measures in the city center were also discussed, such as the redesign of the former Am Forum water basin and the unsealing and greening of Ilmenauer Platz.

The meeting also offered space for discussions between the green sponsors and city representatives. Those present took the opportunity to explore suggestions for improvement and discuss challenges in the area of green spaces. Such exchange formats promote a sense of community and show how important cooperation between citizens and the city administration is.

But the commitment of Homburg's citizens does not stop with maintaining green spaces. Residents throughout the city have been involved in various initiatives and associations for over 30 years. The activities range from volunteer park maintenance and the design of tree discs to garbage collection campaigns and cultural events. This form of civic engagement not only strengthens the social structure, but also significantly improves the living environment, as other cities, for example Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, show.

The Green Sponsors and their supporters are a prime example of how collective commitment to a better environment and quality of life in the city is fruitful. It is clear that the trend towards more sustainability and community projects - including the desire of many people to grow their own fruit and vegetables - is gaining momentum. In Homburg you are on the right track. Keep it up!

We look forward to future projects and commitments that will make the city of Homburg even more livable.
