Chess prodigy from Lebach: Liam represents Germany in Batumi!

In an exciting moment for the chess community in Germany, Liam Maddox Schröder, a ten-year-old chess star from Lebach, was announced by the German Chess Federation nominated for the World Chess Championship in the U8, U10 and U12 age groups. The competition will take place in Batumi, Georgia, where he will compete against the best young players in the world.

The anticipation is great because Liam can look back on an impressive career. In June 2023 he took part in the German Youth Individual Championships in Willingen, where he proudly carried the Saarland flag during the ceremonial entry of the federal states. This experience shaped him and gave him valuable contacts with his peers from all over the world.

Saarland successes and championships

However, his path to the World Cup began before that. Both Saarland youth individual championships, which took place in St. Wendel from February 22nd to 26th, 2025, Liam shone in the U10 age group. With an impressive record of 6.5 points out of 7 possible, he took the title of Saarland champion on his head and thus qualified for the German Youth Individual Championships 2025, which will be held in Willingen from May 18th to 26th.

With such a performance, Liam shows that he has a good knack for the game. He mastered the thinking time of 75 minutes for 40 moves and 15 minutes for the remaining moves, supplemented by an increment of 30 seconds per move, with flying colors. The Saarland Chess Association and the city of St. Wendel gave him and all participants their well-deserved thanks for the organization and support during the tournament.

World Cup: Against the best

The upcoming one World Cup Batumi will be an exciting challenge for Liam. With 145 participants from many different countries, it will be at a high level. It will be exciting to see how he performs in this international competition and what experiences he can bring home with him.

The entire region is keeping their fingers crossed for him as he prepares for this exciting journey. “It's not just a competition, but an opportunity to make new friends and learn from other talented players,” said Liam. His pride in representing Germany is evident and everyone is looking forward to seeing what he will achieve at the World Cup.

Will Liam become the next big talent in chess? The signs are good and with his career so far he definitely has the potential to do so. We wish him much success for the upcoming games!
