St. Ingbert: City council fights for support for life-saving swimming clubs!
Summer is in full swing and many people are longing for water and refreshment. But the Saarbrücker Zeitung reports that the number of fatal swimming accidents in Germany has increased again in recent years. This was also the case last summer weekend, when several people lost their lives in lakes and swimming pools. This vividly shows how crucial it is to be able to swim - a skill that can be vital to survival in an emergency.
The urgency of this issue has been recognized in St. Ingbert. The last City Council meeting was clearly about supporting local swimming clubs, who regularly highlight the importance of swimming. All city council members agreed: promoting swimming is essential. However, a dispute arose when the SPD demanded more support at short notice, but this did not come through.
Alarming numbers and initiatives
The DLRG, the German Life Saving Society, has published alarming figures on the subject of drowning accidents. In 2023, it recorded 411 fatal accidents in German waters - an increase of 31 compared to the previous year. This marks the third year in a row that the number of drownings has increased, and more than 400 victims have been counted for the first time since 2019. DLRG President Ute Vogt is hopeful that an awareness of the dangers will develop in the coming warm months. In particular, the DLRG plans to make parents of young children aware of the special risks (DLRG).
To illustrate the situation even more vividly, we recommend taking a look at the data on the history of drownings and life-savings since 1951, which the DLRG regularly publishes. These can be found on Statista and clearly demonstrate the development in this sensitive area (Statista).
Swimming clubs as lifesavers
The St. Ingbert swimming clubs are not only sports facilities, but also training centers for safe behavior in the water. They make a huge contribution to raising awareness and training young people in the art of swimming. Swimming lessons can not only teach swimming skills, but also save lives. This belief was reiterated at the most recent city council meeting and remains of central importance for the future.
In times like these, everyone should take a look at their swimming skills or practice them. Because everyone should have the opportunity to be safe in the water - for ourselves and for those around us.
