Job crisis in Saarland: 2000 jobs in the auto industry at risk!

In Saarland, the situation in the automotive supply industry is becoming increasingly precarious. Large companies such as ZF and Bosch have today started cutting around 2,000 jobs. This not only affects the direct workforce, but also sends a wave of uncertainty across the entire industry. How stern.de reports, the automotive supplier Voit plant in St. Ingbert is threatened with closure next year. Employees are worried about their future while the industry is struggling with a difficult market environment characterized by many uncertainties.

Patrick Selzer, First Representative of IG Metall Saarbrücken, describes the mood among the employees as disappointed and characterized by fears for the future. According to estimates, 15% of supplier companies in Saarland are at acute risk and the situation also looks difficult for 60%. Selzer demands a clear commitment from employers to secure locations and jobs.

Voit and the challenges

The Voit company must prepare itself particularly well in this tense situation. Works council chairwoman Sandra Dellmann assumes that the approximately 680 employees will have to move to a transfer company if ZF's plans become reality. The collaboration between Voit and ZF is in jeopardy because ZF is apparently planning to withdraw all of the company's products. These scenarios are particularly bitter for many employees who have been working for a stable professional future for years.

Economics Minister Jürgen Barke (SPD) also points out how highly dependent suppliers are on the combustion engine. In his role, he called for clear transition periods for the change to electromobility in order to ensure a smooth transformation. Saarland has even launched a Federal Council initiative to promote the ramp-up of electromobility. Barke criticizes management mistakes in the industry and stands up for the employees.

Difficult conditions due to delivery bottlenecks

Added to this are the delivery problems at chip manufacturer Nexperia, which are further exacerbating the already tense situation. ZF has already prepared short-time work at several locations, including Saarbrücken, which is causing further concerns among employees. In Saarland, a total of around 38,000 people are employed directly and indirectly in vehicle construction. The uncertainty is felt across the entire region.

The members of IG Metall and current developments show that the industry needs to rethink things again. The pressure on suppliers is increasing, while at the same time the change to electromobility cannot be stopped. The coming months will be crucial for how the automotive industry in Saarland will develop.
