Four wolves in Saarland: sheep protection measures now required!

Something is happening in the wolves' habitat in Saarland! So far this year, four wolf detections have been recorded in the Merzig-Wadern district. This region in the west of Saarland borders on Rhineland-Palatinate and the Hochwald area, where a pack of wolves has been found, like the one Borken newspaper reported. The sightings are remarkable because there were a total of eight confirmed detections last year. However, it remains exciting because so far there is no evidence of a permanent settlement of wolves in Saarland.

The recent discovery of wolf pups, which were captured by an automated wildlife camera in the Merzig-Wadern district at the beginning of July, was particularly eye-catching. This was the first record of wild wolf pups in this area. Experts suspect that this is a cross-border pack between Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, like that Blue light report Saarland highlights. The scientific classification of these sightings is classified as C1 evidence, with solid evidence supporting the existence of these wolves.

Wolf evidence in 2025

The wolf detections so far this year are an exciting chapter in the return of wolves in Saarland. Here is an overview of the secured sightings:

  • 04-06-2025: Landkreis Merzig-Wadern, Reh-Riss, Fähe, Rudel Hochwald aus RLP, GW3274f
  • 11-06-2025: Landkreis Merzig-Wadern, Losung, Rüde, Rudel Hochwald aus RLP, GW3609m

  • 21-08-2025: Landkreis Merzig-Wadern, Rotwild-Riss, Rudel Hochwald aus RLP

The Saarland.de also informs about the importance of this evidence: it helps to monitor the condition of the wolf population and, if necessary, to take protective measures.

Prevention and protective measures

In order to support animal husbandry in Saarland, Saarland was designated as a prevention area at the end of October 2024. So far, 26 applications have been approved to support protective measures for sheep and goats to protect them against wolves, in particular through the construction of protective fences. These measures are of great importance and bring a payout of around 200,000 euros, 60 percent of which is covered by the federal government and 40 percent by the state.

Although wolf sightings are increasing in the region, there have been no reports of livestock kills or personal injuries to date. Anyone who has information about possible wolf sightings can contact the relevant authorities to report the information promptly. Nature is exciting, and the return of the wolf to our surroundings will certainly spark a lively discussion in Saarland!
