Oeversee after fatal accident: Parents demand stricter speed limits!

On July 4, 2025, a tragic traffic accident occurred in the tranquil Oeversee, Schleswig-Flensburg district. An eleven-year-old boy who was riding his bicycle was hit by a car while crossing the road at a bus stop and died a few days later in Kiel University Hospital. This shocking news has caused great consternation in the community and has subsequently sparked a debate about road safety and speed limits. Mayor Ralf Bölck (CDU) has already announced that he will advocate for a speed limit at the accident site, which currently has a limit of 80 km/h. In addition, the municipality plans to send a letter to the state Ministry of Transport to demand a speed limit and traffic lights at critical points, according to the NDR report.

The Munkwolstrup Village Community Parents' Initiative sees the bus stops in the area as "acute danger spots" and is calling for immediate safety measures for school children. They advocate reducing the speed to 60 km/h near the Oeversee Bilschau/Am Krug and Oeversee-Sankelmark Akademiezentrum stops and introducing a speed limit of 30 km/h during school hours to ensure the safety of children. Currently, crossing the street is only possible via a traffic island, which only increases parents' worries. According to a 2017 WHO study, the risk of death in an accident at 80 km/h is almost 100 percent. The initiative therefore calls for concrete measures before the end of the 2025 summer holidays to prevent further tragedies, as reported in the CN.

Appeal to road safety

Against the background of these frightening events, the parents' initiative appeals to those responsible to take the "Law on Safe Routes to School" and the "Safe Routes to School" decree seriously. Municipalities are obliged to design plans for safe walking and cycling paths and to defuse dangerous areas. The initiative's spokespeople emphasize that it is time to prioritize protecting children first. Important traffic signs that indicate the proximity of schools must be readily observed and given appropriate attention in traffic in order to minimize the risk of accidents, as the Bahls driving school explains.

The tragedy that occurred in Oeversee shows once again how important it is for road users to take the meaning of traffic signs seriously, especially near schools. Vehicles must be able to slow down in good time when children cross the street. The residents and especially the parents would like the Schleswig-Flensburg district road traffic authority to quickly examine the safety situation, especially with regard to the police accident report. The uncertainty about the exact circumstances of the accident only makes the calls for faster implementation of safety measures more urgent.

At a time when the safety of our children should be an absolute priority, it is to be hoped that everyone involved has a good hand in contributing to safety on the roads and preventing such tragic accidents in the future.
