Mölln is blossoming: new cafés and shops are revitalizing the city center!

Something is happening in Mölln! The city is experiencing a number of new openings that are bringing a breath of fresh air to the city center. Fabienne Lahary recently opened her tea house “Papotee” on the market, while Lukasz Achilles responded to citizens’ wishes with the concept store including coffee bar “Till’s” on Mühlenstrasse. The focus here was on the demand for more accommodation options. Melanie Leisten has also brought a fresh boost to the shopping experience at the historic market with her shop “Tillda”. Particularly pleasing for lovers of Asian cuisine: Sushi is now also available in the city at “Rin Sushibar Mölln” and “Viet No.1”.

The city administration has dealt intensively with the problem of vacancies in Mölln city center, which has been increasing for years. According to herzogtum-direkt.de, high rental prices and changed shopping behavior are the main causes. City manager Monika Siegel has already written to owners of vacant buildings to inform them about possible support. Measures such as presenting empty shops with window film and recommending adjustments to basic rents are intended to help stimulate the market.

New life in Mölln

The city of Mölln has initiated a “temporary store” project that has enabled those interested in starting a business to temporarily use empty stores since 2024. Politicians have decided to extend this project by three years. This shows how seriously the city is trying to increase the attractiveness of its city center. Mayor Jan Wiegel emphasizes that it is crucial to create framework conditions to revitalize the city center. Positive examples such as the planned opening of an Italian delicatessen on Pietro Usai's main street show that the measures are having an effect.

More exciting new openings are in the starting blocks. A new store on Main Street plans to focus on natural cosmetics and organic cosmetic products. In addition, the Don Bosco House will open an inclusive café at Hauptstrasse 84 after extensive renovation. This will certainly make an important contribution to further increasing the diversity and quality of life in the city center.

Challenges of vacancy

The trend increase in vacancies not only leads to a downward spiral for the affected properties, but also has a negative impact on the occupancy rates of the surrounding businesses. It is therefore urgently necessary to develop creative and multifunctional usage concepts. Another approach for action could be the state program “Future City Center”, which provides a total of 10 million euros for new retail concepts and creative uses of space. The aim of the programs is to promote new forms of business and social togetherness in order to make inner cities more attractive again, as is also described on nachhafte-stadtentwicklung-hessen.de.

In summary, it can be said that Mölln is well on the way to revitalizing the city center with new ideas and offers. With the commitment of business founders and the city administration, hope is being nurtured that the once lively city center will soon become an attraction for residents and visitors again.
