SHMF 2025: Music festivals in the Duchy of Lauenburg are taking the stage!

The wait is finally over: The 40th Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (SHMF) started today, July 5, 2025! Music lovers in Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg and parts of Denmark and Lower Saxony can experience a total of 203 concerts until August 31st. The festival is thus celebrating a major anniversary and impresses with a wide range of musical offerings, which were immediately impressive to hear on the opening day.

This year the focus is on the sound diversity of Istanbul. The program is really colorful: from the virtuoso Israeli mandolinist Avi Avital, who combines art music with folklore, to the brothers Lucas & Arthur Jussen, who play with two grand pianos. The Austrian music cabaret by Mnozil Brass will also provide a great atmosphere. Another highlight will be the concert at Gut Wotersen, where Omer Meir Wellber, designated general music director of the Hamburg State Opera, will take the listeners into the world of “blind listening”.

Impressive opening concerts

The opening concerts in the Lübeck Music and Congress Hall on July 5th and 6th were a complete success and have already been sold out. Under the direction of Christoph Eschenbach, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra played Bruckner's Symphony No. 7, while pianist Khatia Buniatishvili was represented by Ray Chen. For all those who were unable to experience the concert live, there was the opportunity to watch it on television on NDR Kultur or 3sat.

The children's music festival, which will take place at Gut Wotersen, is also causing a stir, as is the regular music festival. The supporting program is full of surprises: a gondolier and a bubble artist are sure to delight visitors young and old.

A celebration for all generations

To celebrate its 40th edition, the SHMF has put together a diverse line-up. Works from Kassia to Cem Esen are on the program in over 60 concerts. Concertgoers can also look forward to special performances by well-known artists such as Fazıl Say and Anne-Sophie Mutter. The pianist Fazıl Say is particularly well represented as a portrait artist with 17 concerts and is touring through several cities, including Lübeck and Flensburg.

Additionally, an exciting outstanding film concert with “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” will be offered on August 1st and 2nd. There is something for every generation. The unsurpassed sound quality and creative ambience make these events a must for every music lover!

Tickets for the concerts are available via the website www.shmf.de and by telephone via the ticket hotline 0431-23 70 70. Around two thirds of the concerts are already sold out, which is why it is advisable to get in quick.

The festival is supported by a variety of sponsors and partners, including the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, GP JOULE and the BMW Group, who together help ensure that cultural highlights like the SHMF can continue to take place in the future. Anyone who is interested in the major music festivals in Schleswig-Holstein should also get an overview of the numerous events such as the Kiel Week and the Wacken Open Air, which are also very popular in the region.
