Hörnbad Kiel closes in summer: renovations and exams are pending!

From the end of June, the popular Hörnbad in Kiel will be partially shut down for a few weeks. The sauna and wellness area will be closed from Monday, June 30th until the beginning of September. This is due to extensive maintenance, cleaning and repair work that the Kiel swimming and sports facility companies have planned. As the KN reports, the Hörnbad is the focus of an extensive overhaul, which will be completely closed from Saturday, July 26th to Sunday, September 7th, 2025. This much is certain: some measures must be taken to meet the needs of all water lovers.

The Hörnbad has been in the news in recent months when, after only six years of use, many tiles in the sports and leisure pool had to be replaced due to structural defects. Tiles in the sports pool had come loose, while a long crack was discovered in the tiles in the leisure area. This effort was not cheap; The renovation cost the city of Kiel around 44,000 euros and resulted in several weeks without swimming.

Maintenance work and testing operations

The closure also coincides with a special event: On July 2nd and 3rd, the sports area will be closed from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. due to the final exams for swimming pool operations specialists. These tests take place in the Hörnbad and are a sign of the quality and importance of this facility. This test is being carried out in Kiel for the first time since 2001, which increases the anticipation of the future specialists.

A total of 36 prospective specialists have to complete a demanding examination program, which also includes passing a 400-meter swimming test in record time and mastering transport swimming in clothing. For swimmers who are known to be “active,” this test will certainly be a challenge – but certainly also a welcome opportunity to showcase their skills.

Children and young people benefit from the Kiel Pass

While there are temporary restrictions in the Hörnbad, children and young people up to the age of 18 who have the Kiel Pass can look forward to it. From January 2024 you will receive free entry to the Kiel baths. After presenting your Kiel Pass, you will receive a personalized value card with a credit of 7.15 euros per month. Younger visitors can attend and enjoy the bathing fun for a maximum of 85.80 euros per year.

However, it should be noted that the offer does not apply to gastronomy, sauna or shop items. The prepaid cards can be picked up directly at the Hörnbad cash desk on Mondays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Kiel Pass and an official document are required to personalize the cards. The legal guardians are asked to collect these together with their children the first time so that everything goes smoothly.
