Kiel is facing a referendum: the 2036 Olympic Games are in danger!
Kiel in the Olympic Games? The citizens of the Schleswig-Holstein state capital will soon vote on this question. However, the date on which the referendum will take place has not yet been determined. Loud kn online Kiel sports department head Gerwin Stöcken (SPD) plans to coordinate the vote in coordination with other applicant cities such as Berlin, Munich and Hamburg. The aim of this measure is to achieve a high number of votes and thus broad support for the Summer Olympics.
A small dispute arose when the AfD wanted to request its own referendum for November 16th or May 31st, 2026. In contrast, Stöcken filed an urgent motion to prevent this proposal. He emphasized the opportunities that the Olympic Games hold, while AfD parliamentary group leader Fabian Voß warned of possible financial risks and pointed out unused sports facilities after the games. During the vote, all parliamentary groups except the AfD and council member Ansgar Stalder (Die Basis) voted for Stöcken's urgent motion.
Referendum in November? Detailed preparations
On November 29th, the citizens of Kiel are scheduled to vote on the Olympic sailing competitions, while Hamburg's decision on the Olympics is also due on the same day. A council decision on September 17th will set the exact date for Kiel. Mayor Ulf Kampf (SPD) is optimistic and hopes for numerous “yes” votes. He points to the positive impact of the 1972 Olympics on the city, which could well point to a similar future.
In preparation for the referendum, a comprehensive cost and financing overview will be drawn up in consultation with the application company and Hamburg. In October, the council meeting is scheduled to decide on the planning concept and financial transparency. A feasibility study for the urban development aspects will be presented by architect Stefan Behnisch, with the Schilksee harbor coming into focus as a future center for water sports. The majority of the existing buildings in the port should be retained.
Overall, Kiel is applying for the disciplines of sailing, coastal rowing and open water swimming for the Olympic Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044. The discussion and planning surrounding the Olympic Games is moving into the next round and the city must now set the course for a successful future.
