Kiel Week 2025: A flight over the impressive windjammer parade!
The Kiel Week is coming to an end and has once again thrilled numerous visitors. The maritime spectacle took place from June 21st to 29th, 2025, offering a wide program not only to water sports enthusiasts, but also to music lovers and families. Axel Heimken, head of photography at Kieler Nachrichten, enjoyed a very unusual view from the air - a flight over the Kiel Week festival areas in a Cessna from the Holtenau air sports club, which took him over the sailing area in Schilksee and along the fjord. With blue skies and sunshine, he experienced the windjammers, which lined up like a pearl necklace along the water, as the big highlight of the trip, as KN Online reports.
The windjammer parade on June 28th in particular attracted thousands of people to the banks of the Kiel Fjord. The parade was led by the famous sailing training ship “Gorch Fock”, which sailed ahead at a speed of 6.5 knots. Organizers reported a rush of around 170,000 visitors, which far exceeded the record number of the previous year. The wind conditions were optimal for the sailors, which meant that the spectacle was very well received by spectators both on the Falckensteiner beach and from boats on the water, according to information from Mopo.
The program of the Kiel Week
The Kiel Week program was diverse and ranged from concerts to children's activities to culinary experiences. The highlights were the performances by various bands. On Tuesday, June 24th, the rock band Afterimage performed on the town hall stage, followed by Aura Dione. On Thursday, Tribute Day transformed the stage into a tribute to the famous musicians with performances that appealed to both nostalgics and young music fans. Other musical highlights included the performance of Eko Fresh, Annett Louisan and Tocotronic in the Krusenkoppel, reports NDR.
But the Kiel Week didn't just have a lot to offer musically. The popular Balloon Sail with the “Night Glow”, in which illuminated hot air balloons shone in the sky, as well as the large final fireworks display under the motto “Home under the stars” set further accents in the colorful program. Around three million guests were expected over the entire duration of the event, making Kiel Week one of the largest maritime festivals in the world.
The Kiel Week 2025 will probably be remembered - not only because of the huge windjammer parade or the exciting concerts, but also because of the impressive display of old seafaring traditions and the happy togetherness of the people. The organizers have cleverly managed to put together a festival that appeals to all generations and packs maritime tradition into a present worth experiencing. A great success that was a pleasure for everyone involved.
