Celebration of the 40th anniversary: Kiwanis Club Ratzeburg honored!
What an occasion! The Kiwanis Club Ratzeburg is proudly celebrating its 40th anniversary. The club was founded in 1985 on the initiative of Manfred Ehmer, a former employee of Deutsche Bank in Lübeck. Together with lawyer Uwe Ramm, he gathered interested men to found the association. The official registration with the District Court took place in June 1985, which represents a significant milestone for the club. The first public presentation took place at the Christmas market around St. Petri, where the club had an apple punch stand. The proceeds went to a good cause - cuddly toys for sick children in the Ratzeburg hospital. Here reports on the founding and first steps of the club.
Special honors were on the agenda of the anniversary celebration. Dr. Jochen Tiedemann, the club's president, awarded the loyal members with a certificate of honor and a bottle of Kiwanis wine. One of these loyal companions is Manfred Ehmer, who is the only active founder and remains in his position today. Wolfram Braun also played a significant role in the club's leadership team and was president twice. Christian Eichblatt has been taking care of the finances of the Kiwanis Club Support Association as treasurer for more than 20 years. Clear proof that community is very important here.
Honor for commitment to youth work
Another highlight of the event is the awarding of the Heinrich Zille Prize to Jens Pechel, who is being honored for his outstanding commitment to youth work in the Duchy of Lauenburg district. The award ceremony will take place on July 3rd at 7:30 p.m. in the Rococo Hall of the Ratzeburg District Museum. The award has been presented since 1988 to individuals who volunteer to care for others, reflecting the Kiwanis motto “Serving the Children.” Pechel made a particular contribution to organizing the “Stadtspiel Mölln” and was the first chairman of the district youth group from 2008 to 2022. This award is not just a certificate, but also a commemorative coin, prize money and a Zille special print. Here find out more about the honor.
The history of the Kiwanis series is also noteworthy nationwide. Kiwanis International was founded in Detroit, Michigan, USA in 1915 and has since spread rapidly around the world. The original objective was to network companies before focusing on serving children in 1919. Today there are Kiwanis clubs in almost 80 countries, with Ratzeburg members also being part of this large family. Here you can read more about the international history of Kiwanis.
The 40th anniversary shows that the Kiwanis Club Ratzeburg not only looks back on a long tradition, but also remains active in the present and future. “Doing good together” seems to continue to be the leitmotif that drives the members and focuses on the well-being of children and young people.
