Memorial trip: In the footsteps of the Lübeck martyrs in Lübeck!

On Saturday, July 19, 2025, a special memorial bicycle tour will remember the Lübeck martyrs who sacrificed their lives for their faith over 80 years ago. Organized by the Luther Church in Lübeck and in cooperation with the ADFC Lübeck and the November 10th Working Group, the event begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Luther Church in Moislinger Allee 98.

During the tour, which lasts around 2.5 to 3 hours, the participants will cycle in the footsteps of the Lübeck martyrs through St. Lorenz-Süd and along the Canal Trave to the castle monastery. An important stop will be the JVA at Marliring before reaching the destination, the Propsteikirche Herz Jesu, Parade 12, 23552 Lübeck. At various stopping points, memorial sponsors await participants who will report on the lives and painful stories of the four Lübeck clergymen.

A moving legacy

Who were the Lübeck martyrs? On November 10, 1943, the Protestant pastor Karl Friedrich Stellbrink and the Catholic chaplains Hermann Lange, Eduard Müller and Johannes Prassek were executed in the Hamburg prison at Holstenglacis. The National Socialist People's Court had condemned them for their courageous public statements against the atrocities of the Nazi regime and accused them, among other things, of undermining military strength, treachery and favoring the enemy.

Let us remember: These clergymen transcended denominational boundaries, motivated by their faith to stand up against injustice. Inspired by the strong voice of Bishop Clemens August Graf von Galen, they were determined to obey God rather than the tyrants of their time. It is therefore not surprising that the memory of her began in secret just a few days after her execution and gave rise to a place of remembrance and prayer - the Lübeck Martyrs Memorial.

Community remembrance and education

The memorial bike tour is not only a sporting activity, but also a sign of community and shared memory. The aim is to combine historical education with physical activity and thereby raise awareness of the courage that these clergy showed over 80 years ago.

Participation in the bike tour is free for all participants and registration is not required. The only thing you should bring with you is weather-appropriate clothing and enough food. This makes it a wonderful opportunity to pedal together next Saturday and at the same time explore the historical significance of our region. Further information on education about the Lübeck martyrs can be found, for example, on the city of Lübeck's education portal. Materials are also available there for schools that prepare the history of these brave men and make them usable for teaching.

Take this opportunity to find out about the historical context and the significance of the Lübeck martyrs. Catholic parish of Lübeck reports that the Lübeck Martyrs Memorial was inaugurated in 2013 and has been a place of learning and remembrance ever since. Here history is kept alive not only to remember history, but also to sensitize posterity to the values of civic engagement and freedom of belief.

Come together, cycle together and pause – that is the motto of the memorial bike tour that will take place in Lübeck on July 19th!
