Lübeck is not planning any major construction sites – small projects and new things at the freight station!

The city of Lübeck has already presented its infrastructure plans for 2025, and there are some notable developments. How LN online reports, the city is planning to forego major construction sites for the time being due to a strained budget situation. Instead, five smaller projects to remove frost damage are to be implemented, including on Friedhofsallee and Bei der Lohmühle. However, it remains important to maintain road safety despite the austerity measures - there is a current need for action if grades are worse than 4.5.

A look into the future shows that more extensive projects will be tackled again from 2027, provided finances allow it. At least 12 million euros are required annually for this. But the current construction sites are not everything: Another highlight is the topping-out ceremony of the new “Alter Güterbahnhof” building project, which will create over 100 new residential units in the form of rental apartments and townhouses. This is part of the transformation of a former industrial wasteland into a new urban district with more than 300 residential units, a hotel and micro-apartments.

Bailiff shares her experiences

Another interesting aspect comes from bailiff Susanne Finckler, who reports on her experiences in Lübeck. Loud schleswig-holstein.de Bailiffs are responsible for enforcing seizures and evictions, which often puts them in dangerous situations. In Berlin, bailiffs are now equipped with protective vests, but there is no acute need for them in Lübeck. Susanne describes that the tone towards civil servants has changed in recent years, which does not make the challenges in her job any easier.

It should be noted that bailiffs are the only authority responsible for enforcing legal claims. Your area of work includes not only the execution of foreclosures, but also the delivery and acceptance of property information. An experience that requires a lot of patience and commitment.

Mobility and investments

In addition, mobility in Lübeck is being addressed through the “Ticket for Driving License” initiative, which is now ending. Since 2022, those issuing a driving license have received a free public transport annual pass, which should improve both the ecological and traffic situation. A total of 818 people, mostly older women, took advantage of this offer. However, due to the financial situation, this campaign is being discontinued in order to save 291,000 euros. Applications will continue to be accepted until the end of the year and a relaunch could be on the cards if the fiscal situation improves.

Finally, as part of the 10th German-Finnish Port Day, there will be a discussion about how Mayor Jan Lindenau in Helsinki called for better port connections by 2028. The necessary adaptation of the infrastructure is essential to ensure the security of the Baltic Sea ports, especially in view of recent cyber attacks and acts of sabotage.

In summary, Lübeck is facing some challenges, but is also working towards a number of exciting projects to be implemented in the coming years. The patience and foresight of the city residents is therefore required as we continue to follow the development of the Hanseatic city.
