University of Lübeck: New vice presidents focus on teaching and sustainability!
The University of Lübeck has a breath of fresh air in the executive board and focuses on innovation and sustainability. On July 13, 2025, the Academic Senate elected Prof. Moreen Heine and Prof. Till Tantau as the university's new vice presidents. Both will take office on August 1st for three years and will not only bring fresh knowledge but also new approaches to their tasks.
Prof. Moreen Heine will act as Vice President in the area of Transfer and Sustainability. Heine, who was appointed Professor of E-Government and Open Data Ecosystems in 2019, has so far focused primarily on digital transformation in the public sector. Her research focuses on human-centered and process-oriented applications, which she promotes at the Institute for Multimedia and Interactive Systems at the university. Your goal is to further develop the existing structures in the area of sustainability. Her role as scientific director of the Joint eGov and Open Data Innovation Lab will also be important here, where solutions for digitalization are developed together with partners from administration, science and business.
Innovative approaches to teaching
The role of Vice President for Teaching is taken over by Prof. Till Tantau, who has been Professor of Theoretical Computer Science since 2005 and Director of the corresponding institute since 2022. Tantau has defined clear goals to strengthen teaching at the university: He wants to improve the self-image of the degree programs, promote lively face-to-face teaching with direct interaction and promote internationalization. His approaches were well received by the Senate and convinced the members, which ultimately contributed to his election.
University President Prof. Helge Braun expressed his confidence in the now fully staffed executive committee and emphasized the importance of the collaboration between these two experienced scientists. The election of the two vice presidents was carried out in accordance with the rules of the University of Lübeck's presidential election regulations and took place in an open Senate meeting in which the public could participate digitally.
With their skills and experience, Heine and Tantau bring a breath of fresh air into the university's fortunes and send a clear signal for a future-oriented academic institution. Students and employees will soon be able to look forward to the new initiatives that the two will implement in the first phase of their terms of office.
In the digital world and as part of the cooperation in the Joint eGov and Open Data Innovation Lab, the university will undoubtedly break new ground that will enrich both research and teaching. LN online reports that Heine and Tantau's approaches were well received by the Senate and paved the way for fruitful collaboration. With an interdisciplinary team and a design-oriented approach, a new chapter in the university's history is being opened in Lübeck.
