Grönemeyer impresses at SHMF with Bochum Symphony Orchestra in Neumünster!

The Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival 2025 (SHMF) reached its climax last Sunday in the Holstenhalle Neumünster with an impressive concert by the Bochum Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Herbert Grönemeyer, known for his lively energy and youthful lightness, led the concert, in which, among other things, the “Slavic March in B minor op. 31” by Peter Tchaikovsky was performed. Grönemeyer, who served as “primus inter pares,” honored his concertmaster with a special gesture of recognition and noted how important the beauty and emotionality of the music is. Grönemeyer had already worked with the Bochum Symphony Orchestra several times, most recently in June 2023, and his return was a day of joy for music lovers.

Another highlight of the evening was the “Herbs Suite”, an orchestral adaptation of Grönemeyer’s own pop pieces and film compositions, arranged by Alfred Kritzer. The soprano Sophie Harr shone with wordless vocals that served as a highly emotional means of expression. After the break, pianist Anna Vinnitskaya took over, mastering the technically demanding “Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, op. 18” by Sergei Rachmaninoff with flying colors. Grönemeyer, shaped by personal losses, has a deeper emotional connection to this work and expressed this impressively over the course of the concert. The evening ended with a standing ovation and a storm of applause when Grönemeyer took the microphone to sing some of his best-known songs such as “Halt mich” and “Bochum”. The circle came full circle from classical music to catchy melodies, which left the audience thrilled.

Festivals in German musical life

Artistic highlights like the SHMF are not isolated cases in Germany. As the German Music Information Center reported, numerous music festivals shape cultural life throughout the year in all regions. These festivals are dedicated to different musical focuses and offer a varied event format that stands out from a normal concert offering. The selection is diverse, from professional to semi-professional to amateurs who appear in these settings.

An example of another cultural event is the reading festival “Tauschen & Listen”, which takes place on July 6th in Schwerin. Here, authors, journalists and city representatives will read stories at various locations in the state capital from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Prominent participants include the actor Martin Neuhaus and the NDR presenter Leif Tennemann. This event is an example of how diverse the cultural offerings in our cities are.

Artists like Herbert Grönemeyer play a central role in disseminating and enlivening such events. Both in classical music and in the area of readings, the emotional and artistic connection to the audience is constantly revitalized. A good knack for organizing events that touch and enliven the audience is definitely required.

The future definitely promises a lot of cultural highlights. Whether at large festivals or intimate readings, the love of music and literature continues to be kept alive in Germany.
