Traffic chaos in Hamburg: A7 closure hits Ed Sheeran and Schlagermove!
Next weekend, Hamburg will be the venue for two major events - and that is likely to shake up the entire traffic situation. Ed Sheeran is giving three concerts in the Volksparkstadion, while the popular hit move is taking place at the same time. This is exactly where the traffic chaos could begin.
From Friday evening at 10 p.m. to Monday morning at 5 a.m., Autobahn 7 will be completely closed in both directions between the Hamburg-Stellingen and Hamburg-Heimfeld junctions. This full closure is necessary to install new traffic sign gantries and will also affect the Elbe Tunnel. Due to the major events taking place at the same time, which include around 150,000 Ed Sheeran fans and many participants in the hit move, there is concern about the arrival of visitors. ndr.de reports that Autobahn GmbH is working on proposed solutions to make it easier for concert-goers to travel. A corresponding communication on possible measures is expected next week.
Traffic and detours
There are detailed diversions for drivers traveling from the south: From Buchholzer triangle or Horster triangle via the A1, A21 and then back to the A7. Anyone coming from the north should use the B205, A21 and A1 from the Neumünster-Süd junction to get back to the A7. Within Hamburg, the diversions between HH-Heimfeld and HH-Stellingen are clearly signposted. It is also recommended that you travel to the Volksparkstadion via the Hamburg-Volkspark junction.
The organizational challenges are further intensified by the hit move. This starts on Saturday at 3 p.m. and moves with its lyrical parade and around 50 trucks from the Heiligengeistfeld through various streets back to its place of origin. There are also road closures, especially on Saturdays from around 12 p.m., which further increase the traffic situation. The Glacischaussee will be closed from Friday at 7 p.m. to Sunday at 7 a.m. Anyone planning to be out and about in the city during this time should be well prepared. According to mopo.de, a high volume of traffic is expected on all concert days, which is why arriving on time is strongly recommended.
Public transport is in demand
Given the complicated traffic situation, public transport remains an unavoidable alternative. Ed Sheeran's organizers advise using public transport to avoid stressful traffic jams. The S-Bahn lines S3 and S5 take guests to Stellingen, while bus line 22 to the Hellgrundweg stop offers another option. If you have a good hand and plan early, you could enjoy the concerts and the hit move without any major delays.
These mega events also coincide with the start of the holidays in several federal states, which also fuels travel. Lower Saxony and Bremen start on Thursday, while the summer holidays begin on Friday in Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. Those interested should therefore ideally consider public transport or Park+Ride offers. With wise foresight, the traffic jam-filled weekend adventures can perhaps be made a little more relaxed.
