Bosau is investing millions: renovating the dilapidated streets in 2026!

Something is happening in the community of Bosau! The municipality has set up an ambitious renovation program for its streets for 2026. The building committee has already decided to invest a whopping 2 million euros into improving the dilapidated traffic routes. One of the roads in particular need of renovation is the Thürker Redder, whose asphalt surface visibly suffers from potholes, cracks and deep shoulders on the edge of the road. Residents can be happy because these measures should ensure a noticeable improvement in driving comfort. Such renovation work is overdue, especially after a long winter.

But it's not just in Bosau that the infrastructure is being worked on diligently. More and more municipalities in Germany are relying on innovative technologies to better monitor the condition of their roads. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly important. According to the Deutsche Handwerks Zeitung, over 500 municipalities in Germany, France and the USA already use systems like those from the Stuttgart start-up Vialytics. This technology makes it possible to automatically evaluate road images and detect damage such as potholes or cracks in the asphalt. A practical gadget that is used is a cell phone that is mounted on the windshield and regularly takes photos of the road.

Efficiency through artificial intelligence

More and more municipalities are realizing that the use of AI can not only reduce the time-consuming manual effort of road inspection, but also enable accurate and objective data collection. A current study by the German Institute for Urban Studies shows alarming statistics: a third of the roads in cities, towns and districts have significant deficiencies. Every tenth kilometer is in extremely poor condition. In view of these developments, which also expect an investment requirement of around 283 billion euros for existing municipal roads by 2030, the decision in favor of AI-supported solutions is understandable.

Johannes Ludwig from Eagle Eye points out that around a third of municipal assets are tied up in infrastructure. This makes the need for cost efficiency and early damage detection even more important. The mayor of Barleben, Frank Nase, emphasizes how important objective data is for decision-making. However, it should be noted that AI systems do not work without limitations: they can have problems with paving stones and only detect superficial damage.

Outlook on the renovation work

There are great times ahead for Bosau. The planned 2 million euros will flow into a sustainable and intelligent solution for road repair. The combination of traditional renovation and state-of-the-art technology could soon set a precedent and encourage other municipalities to follow suit. Who knows, maybe Bosau will soon be the model for other communities who want to spruce up their streets!
