Fehmarnbelt crossing: construction delays and rescue problems in focus!

The discussions about the Fehmarnbelt crossing are gaining momentum, especially at a time when the completion of the immersed tunnel and the connection to the rail network are in jeopardy. Current reports from ln-online.de show that the already estimated costs of 714 million euros for the Sund Tunnel between Fehmarn and Großenbrode have now risen to over two billion euros. This new estimate not only provides a financing reason for concern, but also introduces delays in construction that could last until the end of 2029.

At the same time, a law ensures that the tunnel fire department on Fehmarn remains unable to act in an emergency. The Schleswig-Holstein Emergency Services Act prohibits trained paramedics from being alerted, which is worrying in such a critical infrastructure. The fire department is currently made up of 43 volunteers who are preparing for emergencies in the future tunnel.

Construction projects and public dialogues

As part of the construction work, an expansion of the working area off Fehmarn by 450 meters is planned, although this still requires approval from the state. To ensure that the public remains informed about the current status, several events are scheduled for November: On November 19th, an island dialogue will take place in the cafeteria of the island school in Burg at 6:30 p.m., followed by a dialogue forum in the Oldenburg commercial center on November 20th at 4:30 p.m. Finally, the railway information center on Fehmarn opens its doors on November 25th between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

The planned meeting of the transport ministers of Denmark and Germany at the construction site in early 2026 is also eagerly awaited, as a new schedule will be discussed.

Transport services and mobility

While construction work on the Fehmarnbelt crossing is in full swing, a new mobility solution could come into play. Lyft, a popular app, allows users to book rides using personal cars. Whether for work or leisure, the app offers an easy way to get around safely and allows you to save with promo codes. For those who want flexibility, Lyft is an attractive alternative to using public transportation during construction.

Registration is quick via the app, which notifies a driver immediately. Payment is made via the credit card on file, which makes the entire process uncomplicated. In this way, mobility for commuters is maintained even in times of comparatively complicated construction work - a further step towards mastering the challenges of the region and making everyday life easier.

It remains to be seen whether the new mobility situation will attract many people from East Holstein. What is certain is that the construction site and the associated developments will continue to be a topic of conversation in the region.
