Sierksdorf: Fire brigade is growing, but compulsory fire brigade remains necessary!

A lot is happening at the volunteer fire department in Sierksdorf. Mayor Udo Gosch (SPD) reported a pleasing increase in membership numbers in the last six months. The force has actually almost doubled in size, a fact that is important not only for the fire department itself, but also for the safety of the community. Nevertheless, the compulsory fire brigade remains in place, although the neighboring town of Roge struggled to maintain its small unit last year, as ln-online.de reports.

In the fall of 2024, four to seven new firefighters were needed in Roge to maintain operations. Here, personal speeches ultimately led to the recruitment of new volunteers - an approach that is being discussed in the Sierksdorf community. There, too, the membership numbers cannot reach the target number of 31 people, despite 13 new members, as there are currently 18 active members and some departures.

Member recruitment and future prospects

The Sierksdorf community council has already discussed various measures to attract members. A total of 75 citizens submitted attractive medical certificates and proof of activities abroad, aimed at people between 25 and 40 years old. Given these numbers, the administration estimates that around 20 people would be willing to volunteer in an emergency, as der-reporter.de reports.

Creative membership recruitment seems unavoidable. In other regions, such as Lütjensee, fire brigade teams had successfully won new members with special campaigns such as printed sandwich bags. In view of the lack of members, it will also be necessary in Sierksdorf to present the fire department in an attractive manner and to develop creative ideas in order to inspire young people for the important task, according to feuerwehrmagazin.de.

New equipment shed for Sierksdorf

Another important point is the new construction of the equipment shed in Sierksdorf. The existing building no longer meets the current requirements and cannot be expanded due to distance requirements. The plan is to build the new fire station in the parking lot behind the old building, not far from the school forest. Completion is expected in approximately two and a half years. Temporary containers are used as a temporary solution for sanitary facilities until completion.

Overall, it can be said that the municipality of Sierksdorf is on the right track, even if there are still challenges to be overcome. The discussion about recruiting members, the level of training and, above all, the construction of the new fire station are central topics that will benefit the safety and reliability of the fire department in the region.
