Umwelthaus Neustadt: Construction starts after delays – A look at the future!

In Neustadt in Holstein, something is happening on the construction site of the new BUND Environmental House. A lot has happened since the groundbreaking in November 2023, although work stalled at times. For a long time, the project seemed to be in danger - construction costs skyrocketed, which ultimately led to a halt to construction. But now there is new hope: a generous subsidy 2.3 million euros from GLS Bank helps close the cost gap.

Completion of the Environmental House, which focuses on environmental education for young and old, is now scheduled for early summer2027targeted. This means the opening date will be postponed by two years after it was originally expected to be completed2021was calculated. The total costs for the new building now amount to:11.3 million euros, an increase of 30 percent compared to the initial estimates, which were four million euros.

Challenges and solutions

The construction halt was caused by massive increases in construction costs and the difficult financial situation. In spring 2025, those responsible for the project were finally able to resume construction work thanks to the commitment from the GLS Trust. However, additional funds had to be acquired again and again, as the construction costs were now estimated at over nine million euros. This means that federal funding is hanging by a thread: it was frozen as long as the additional costs were not secured.

The responsible State Secretary Katja Günther sums up the importance of climate and nature conservation education and the role of the Environment House in this context. In addition to strengthening school education, the Environmental House also plans to reach holiday guests of all ages with exciting educational offerings.

Focus on environmental education

As soon as the environmental house opens, two school classes can be accommodated here at the same time. The successful combination of school and practical environmental experiences will open up new dimensions for participants in how they can deal with their environment and the Baltic Sea. Exchange and learning are also promoted through collaborations with schools and the Zeittor Museum.

Particularly pleasing: Even during the renovation and construction work, the Umwelthaus is already offering over 90 offers, which attracted more than 1,500 participants in 2024. Environmental education should not be neglected despite the physical absence of the building.

The buildings are far from perfect, but the future looks bright for the BUND Umwelthaus in Neustadt. The committed citizens and supporters who did not allow themselves to be discouraged are making a valuable contribution to this important project.
