Red alert: Fire brigade warns of impending moor fires in Quickborn!

In Quickborn, in the Pinneberg district, the fire department sounds the alarm: Himmelmoor currently poses a high risk of forest fires. The NDR reports that the fire brigade has to pay particular attention to the moorland fires due to the current weather conditions and the lack of rain. Press spokesman Thorsten Hintz explains that these operations bring special challenges for the emergency services. This means that the large fire engines can only drive into the moor to a limited extent, which makes access more difficult and the fire-fighting work more complicated.

The fire department has special tools at its disposal to control the flames. The fire is knocked out with so-called “fire slaps”, while in some cases the moor even has to be dug up. Subterranean fires in the peat layers are also threatening and are difficult to detect, especially in sparsely populated areas. To provide support, the Quickborn fire department has an amphibious vehicle that makes it easier to access difficult-to-reach moorland areas. Despite the forecast of rain on July 2nd, this is not enough to avert the danger; The German Weather Service has even declared the second highest forest fire danger level for Quickborn.

Previous fire operations in Quickborn

Over 300 emergency services, including neighboring fire departments and fire brigades from the Pinneberg district fire brigade, were involved in the operation. The extinguishing work was challenging: the fire had spread under the roof and the roof was classified as at risk of collapsing. A crawler excavator had to be brought in to help tear down the roof. Even in these operating conditions, with temperatures around 30 degrees, respiratory protection was necessary. Five people were injured, including three residents; one person had to be hospitalized.

Technical support was provided in the form of aerial measurements by the ABC service and a drone with a thermal imaging camera to monitor the spread of the fire. The criminal police have now started an investigation into the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage. Such incidents clearly show how important the work of the fire brigade is and how prepared local comrades are for such challenges.

The current situation in Himmelmoor and the memories of the recent fire are an urgent appeal to all citizens to take the dangers of fires more seriously and to be careful. It remains to be hoped that the forecast rain will arrive soon to reduce the risk of fire and relieve the burden on emergency services.
