Culture and Adventure: Discover the Northern Tour on the weekend!
There is a lot to report this week, and Cologne is once again the hub of numerous exciting events and topics that move people! A highlight that is coming up this weekend is the program “Nordtour”, which will be broadcast on October 25, 2025. The show presents impressive landscapes, places of longing and culinary delicacies. As an expert, Anja Kretschmer-Rodenbröker will guide the audience through the cemeteries in northern Germany and discuss interesting aspects of mourning culture and historical customs. The broadcast dates are on Saturday, October 25th, from 6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. and the following morning hours.
But that's not all that's exciting. In the field of BMX racing, there was recently the World Championships in Copenhagen, which took place from July 28th to August 3rd, 2025. The BMX facility of the Københavns BMX Club on Amager was the competition venue. Over 264 athletes from 34 countries competed in various categories. It was an exciting week for the athletes and the winners had medals to look forward to: Arthur Pilard of France became world champion in the elite category, while the women's competitions concluded with Beth Shriever at the top. This event shows how popular BMX sport is and what opportunities are available to young talents like eight-year-old Luke Harms from Meppen, who has already won multiple German and European championships and is fighting with his parents for a BMX track in their hometown.
Cemetery whispers and mourning culture
Dealing with the culture of mourning and its traditions is an important topic that concerns people. A suitable example of this is the theme evening “Thinking with your hands – about communal funeral meals”, which took place on October 21, 2025 in Berlin-Schöneberg. The focus was on topics such as communal cooking and coming together to deal with grief. Artist and chef Lily Wittenburg hosted the evening, and it was about much more than just food - it was a profound discussion about food as a gift of comfort and the promotion of caring through shared action.
Such events help ensure that the topic of grief is not taboo, but can be perceived as part of the community and shaped together. In addition, the Schleswig-Holstein State Library in Kiel offers us a place that offers a combination of café, co-working spaces and academic work and thus serves as a retreat for those interested in culture.
Diversity in culture
The cultural diversity in the region is also reflected in other interesting offerings: At Hamburg's Cascadas Club, Claudia Vásquez and Kristina Kasat ensure that young and old get their money's worth at the Caribbean Nights and Miguel Angel delights guests with Latino rhythms. There is also a great project with the inclusive team at Café Anna Blume in Hanover that brings people with and without disabilities together and makes a positive contribution to society.
There are also creative minds, such as the veduta painter Kjeld Heinze, who works on detailed drawings for several weeks, or the glass refiner Pine Honsel from Esgrus, who offers workshops and works with recycled glass. These cultural offerings not only enrich the region, but also show how creative, innovative and collaborative art and craft can be combined.
So there is a lot to discover and experience, be it through sporting successes or cultural events. Stay tuned, because there is always something happening in Cologne and the surrounding area!
