Renovation of Gottorf Castle: 45 million for the future of the museums!

In the heart of Schleswig-Holstein, Gottorf Castle is facing fundamental changes. Renovation work on the historic building, which is best known for its important exhibitions, will begin on September 1, 2025. In total, costs of 45 million euros are expected to be incurred for modernization and creating accessibility, reports NDR. On a final occasion the day before, over 3,000 visitors were able to experience the exhibitions in the castle before it remains closed for the next few years.

The need for action is clear: the historical tour is not easily usable, especially for wheelchair users. Director Thorsten Sadowsky has already announced that he will develop a new overall concept for art and cultural history as well as archeology. Among other things, the plan is to move the archaeological exhibits, such as the famous bog bodies, to the ground floor. Modern forms of presentation and the use of new media are also on the agenda.

No expansion required

The renovation was originally intended to include a glass extension that would serve as a central entrance area and offer additional service facilities. However, these plans were put on hold due to rising construction costs. Loud Landesmuseen.sh The board of the state museums, together with Prime Minister Daniel Günther, decided that the 44.8 million euros were not enough to realize all ambitions and that the focus would instead be on renovating the inventory.

With the change to the master plan, the main focus now remains on renewing the exhibitions in the castle as well as the necessary renovations to improve accessibility. The entire project began around ten years ago with an investment volume of 31.2 million euros, with the exhibition renovation continuing to be the focus.

Sustainable building concepts

The renovation not only offers the opportunity to adapt the castle to modern standards, it is also in the context of sustainable building practices. Loud Museum Association Museums must increasingly rely on sustainable strategies to support climate protection and reduce their operating costs. This includes taking into account energy-efficient building standards and the use of renewable energies. The social dimension, such as accessibility, also plays a major role.

In order to meet the requirements of the future, museum buildings are required to conserve resources and at the same time preserve the cultural heritage. The renovation of Gottorf Castle is a step in the right direction to achieve this important goal. Until the new exhibitions are completed in 2028, the Nydamhalle and several outbuildings will remain open to visitors and continue to offer access to culture.
