AKN closures in summer: replacement traffic is threatened for weeks!
From July 26, 2025, AKN passengers will have to prepare for significant restrictions. How tagesschau.de reported, lines A1 and A2 are affected. The restrictions are part of extensive track work and the renovation of several level crossings between Norderstedt and Neumünster. The route between Kaltenkirchen and Neumünster will remain closed until August 2, 2025 and will be completely replaced by buses.
For travelers this means that the buses run according to the train timetable, but leave Neumünster, Bad Bramstedt and Dodenhof a few minutes before the scheduled departure. The journey times are significantly longer - by around 35 minutes! So if you want to get to Neumünster on time, you should consider taking an earlier train.
Renovation measures and electrification
From August 4th to September 6th, 2025, the A1 line between Eidelstedt and Ulzburg Süd will be completely closed. The reason is extensive work to electrify the route, which is essential for the planned S-Bahn line 5. During this time, a rail replacement service with buses will also be set up, which will extend the journey time by around half an hour. kn-online.de emphasizes that the work will take place during the school holidays in order to minimize disruption to commuters.
In addition, work is taking place on the new electronic signal box in Quickborn. In Tanneneck, the safety technology at the Schulweg level crossing is being modernized and the platforms in Ellerau have already been converted.
Long-term improvement projects
The electrification measures are part of a larger plan to improve rail transport in northern Germany, particularly with regard to the new connection between Eidelstedt and Kaltenkirchen. The S5 project includes around 30 kilometers of electrified tracks and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028. Wikipedia reports that these investments are aimed at modernizing infrastructure and further electrification projects are planned in the coming years.
The entire project may have limitations, but the long-term perspective shows that the railway will be more reliable and more environmentally friendly in the future. Anyone who uses the routes mentioned should prepare well for the upcoming changes and, if necessary, consider alternative travel routes.
