Bargteheide pedals: cycling for a better climate!
On June 7th, city cycling in Bargteheide marked the start of a nationwide initiative to promote cycling. In the midst of a refreshing rain, over 250 participants in 30 teams gathered to give the campaign a lively start. Mayor Gabriele Hettwer didn't miss the opportunity to cycle with the ADFC on idyllic farm routes through Delingsdorf, Ahrensburg, Hammoor and Tremsbüttel.
The route was off busy roads and offered a wonderful experience for all cyclists. At 1 p.m. the participants arrived on the lawn in front of the all-day center, where a warm welcome awaited them. Despite the rainy weather, which prevented some from attending, those present were in high spirits.
Together for the climate
During the event, Hettwer warmly thanked Isa Reher, the climate manager of the Stormarn district, and the ADFC for the first-class organization. Physical well-being was also taken care of: participants were able to help themselves to drinks, fruit and muesli bars while receiving information about cycling. It was also possible to code the bikes, which increased the safety of the participants.
The campaign focuses on the needs of cyclists in Bargteheide. Available defects such as dirty cycle paths or high curbs can be reported via the RADar! reporting platform, which is part of the city cycling app. Readers of the platform have the opportunity to place a pin on a map and select the reason for their report. In this way, citizens actively contribute to improving the cycling infrastructure. The mobility officer, Natascha Pätzold, assured that all reports will be checked regularly and forwarded to the responsible authorities.
Financial support for cycling
But cycling is not only promoted at the local level. Efforts are also being made at the federal political level to support cycling. The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure has made financial resources available to advance the achievement of the federal government's climate protection goals. In this way, the financial support of cycling was secured in the long term.
The investment program “Cycling Model Project”, which runs until 2029, and “Radnetz Deutschland”, which is also active until 2029, are also interesting. There is also a “Special City and Country Program” that will be funded until 2030. This creates the perfect framework for the construction and maintenance of cycle paths. It is important to mention that cycle paths on federal highways, which are the responsibility of the federal government to build, are 100% financed by the federal government.
The city cycling runs until June 27, 2025 and everyone can take part – whether alone or in a team. This means everyone has the opportunity to enter the kilometers they have cycled online or via the CITY CYCLING app. Cycling is not only a sustainable form of transport, it is also fun and brings us a little closer to a climate-neutral future. And that's an opportunity we shouldn't miss!
This makes it clear: cycling is a valuable alternative in Bargteheide and beyond. Let's look forward to exciting cycling days and active citizens who will help make our streets fit for the future.
