Swimming pool future in Glinde: new construction and hot discussions start!
In Glinde, the teaching pool is currently not usable, which is a real nuisance for the local community. At a meeting of the culture committee today, a motion from the Greens will be voted on, which calls for the demolition of the existing pool, followed by a new building at the same location. The goal is to complete the new swimming facility within a year. The reason for the closure is a defective heating system, which not only led to an uncomfortably low water temperature of 19.8 degrees, but also severely restricted the activities of TSV Glinde, the adult education center and physical education lessons in several primary schools. Since Glinde only has this one teaching pool, the alternative options are zero, which makes the situation particularly precarious.
As NDR reports, the heating system is getting old and it is difficult to find suitable replacement parts. A new boiler must be installed, taking into account the requirements of the Building Energy Act. When the repairs will be completed remains unclear (at least for now).
Investments in swimming pools
Glinde's fate is not an isolated case. There are similar efforts in other regions. The first ramming blow for the construction of a new teaching swimming pool was recently celebrated in Farmsen, as reported by hamburg.de. This new teaching pool, which is scheduled to be completed in the next two years, will not only provide high-quality swimming education, but also act as a social infrastructure in the region. Costing around 21 million euros, the construction is supported by various public funds, including funding from the federal “Renovation of Municipal Facilities” program.
No region should be left behind when it comes to swimming lessons for children and young people. The Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior and Sport has therefore initiated a sports facility investment program with a volume of 25 million euros, which aims to modernize the infrastructure for swimming lessons in the municipalities. The aim of this program is that every child in Lower Saxony has the opportunity to learn to swim. According to Niedersachsen.de, municipalities can receive up to 80 percent of the costs reimbursed, and financially weak municipalities in particular benefit here. By June 30th, more than 97 applications had been received with a total volume of around 126.4 million euros.
With regard to the need to secure swimming lessons for the coming generation, the situation in Glinde is a cause for concern. It remains to be seen whether the Greens' proposal can bring about a quick solution today and when the new opportunities for swimming training in Glinde will be available again.
