Storm Joshua withstands dikes in Schleswig-Holstein!

Storm “Joshua” is causing excitement in Schleswig-Holstein, but the dikes have proven to be robust. As ndr.de reports, there was a chain storm surge with up to three storm surges last weekend. The highest water level was recorded at the Eider barrage at 2.22 meters above normal. The best thing about it: The damage is limited, only a few stones on the revetments have come loose. There is some sand loss on the coasts, especially on Sylt, but this is not unusual during storm surges.

Another topic concerns the citizens of Lübeck: the new rent index is coming up! From Monday, the questionnaires will be sent to tenants and landlords, and both are obliged to provide information. This rent index serves as an important basis for future rents and possible rent increases and is created by the FUB IGES research institute on behalf of the city.

Bird flu and daycare care

A worrying issue is bird flu, cases of which are expected to increase in Germany. As ndr.de reports, there are fears of virus transmission from wild birds to poultry farms, which is why chickens are required to be kept in stables. There are already three affected poultry farms in Schleswig-Holstein.

Schleswig-Holstein is a pioneer when it comes to daycare care: almost half of the children are in full-day care. Kiel leads with an impressive rate of 87%, followed by Lübeck with 80%. At the other end of the scale is the Dithmarschen district with only 29%.

Demonstrations and expansion projects

There are also political tensions at the moment. A demonstration in Wedel, organized by the AWO, draws attention to the bankruptcy. The background is a conflict over daycare financing between the city of Wedel and the AWO, in which the city is demanding repayment of over one million euros.

But not everything is about worries and conflicts. In Büsum there are plans to expand the port with investments of up to 20 million euros. The focus is on harbor basin IV, a new pier and additional transshipment points. However, construction should not begin until 2029 at the earliest.

Happiness atlas and the weather

How is the luck of the people of Schleswig-Holstein? The Happiness Atlas 2025 shows that Schleswig-Holstein landed in fifth place and has therefore lost one place compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, Hamburg remains in first place. As far as the weather is concerned, citizens can expect changeable weather: rain showers and thunderstorms are expected, with temperatures between 10 and 12 degrees. In addition, there are moderate to strong winds with squalls on the North Sea.

For those planning trips, the Momondo platform might be useful. It searches hundreds of airlines and travel sites at once and compares the best deals on flights - with no hidden fees.
