Steel crisis: Klingbeil calls for measures for green production!
What is happening in the German steel industry? This is a question on many minds at the moment Deutschlandfunk reported that ArcelorMittal Europe has halted its plans to convert its plants in Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt to climate-neutral production. The reason? A tense market situation that questions the economic viability of CO2-reduced steel production. This turn of events doesn't come at the right time, as many people are worried about their jobs.
Lars Klingbeil, the SPD chairman and Federal Finance Minister, is committed to preserving jobs in the steel industry and made it clear at the SPD Brandenburg state party conference in Cottbus that urgent solutions must be found. In his words, the future of “green steel” for Germany is at stake. This is also supported by other reports, including from ZDF, which once again emphasizes the importance of climate-friendly production methods.
Call for the steel summit
In order to meet the challenges in steel production, Klingbeil called for a steel summit. In discussions with Federal Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU), he called for more commitment from all those involved in order to find a common path. Klingbeil would like all players to come to the table to show perspectives for “green steel”. He asks questions about the design of support programs and transition options that would be necessary for a change. He is of the opinion that a good hand is needed here to make the industry in Germany sustainable.
ArcelorMittal's decision doesn't just affect two plants: the consequences of this development have far-reaching consequences - even the already approved funding of 1.3 billion euros falls through. Around 2,700 people are currently employed in Eisenhüttenstadt and there are great concerns about jobs. The time reports that a review of the terms and funding options is urgently needed in order not to lose even more industry gems.
A look at Bremen
While the situation in Eisenhüttenstadt is assessed as less critical, the situation in Bremen is rapidly becoming problematic. In Bremen, Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte has already called for quick measures to maintain the steelworks. This clearly shows that local policies and economic strategies must go hand in hand to secure the future of steel production.
In summary, it can be said that the pressure on the steel industry is growing. Switching to more environmentally friendly production methods is necessary, and Lars Klingbeil has proven to be an important voice for these concerns. A steel summit could be the first step in the right direction to regain lost perspectives and position the industry sustainably.
