Murder cases involving Marion and Sonja: Police are asking for information from the public
Today, January 21, 2026, the unsolved murder cases of two girls from the 1970s and 1980s cast a dark shadow over the region. The case of Marion Baier, who was murdered under tragic circumstances in Oberasbach in 1973, and the case of Sonja Hurler, who disappeared in Kempten in 1981, have now come back into the spotlight. FR.de reports that…
Marion Baier, only 12 years old, disappeared on the night of July 2, 1973 after a fishing festival in Zirndorf. Her last sighting was by a school friend at around 8 p.m. before her body was found at a construction site the next morning. Investigators suspect a sexual offense because the body was partially undressed and the traces on site were very revealing. In particular, the shoe prints of a well-known sneaker brand and a silver medallion remain. The shoe prints come from Adidas models in size 43, which could further narrow down the perpetrator's position.
Parallels to Sonja Hurler are unmistakable. After an argument with her mother on July 5, 1981, the 13-year-old set off to visit her grandmother, but never arrived. Her body was only found three months later near a barn near Heiligkreuz, and here too it is assumed that a sexual offense was committed. The Kempten criminal police took up this case again in 2023 because new forensic findings confirm a DNA trace on Marion Baier's clothing, which matches a DNA source at the site where Sonja Hurler's body was found. Vol.at reports that…
In response to the new findings, the investigators have formed a working group that is enlisting the support of the Fürth Criminal Investigation Department. So far, DNA testing on 300 men has yielded no results. But the idea that the two girls disappeared in the same week of the year and under similar social conditions draws attention to possible connections between Zirndorf and Kempten and opens doors for new witness leads.
The authorities are calling on the public to provide relevant information. We are particularly looking for memories or photos from the 1973 fishing festival as well as for information about a group of young men who are said to have dragged a screaming girl through Kempten in 1981. There is also a reward totaling 10,000 euros for information that could lead to these cases being clarified.
The two cases are not only tragic examples of personal fate, but also represent a large number of unsolved crimes in the country. Zeit.de highlights that… The number of such cold cases continues to grow and the police are continually encouraged to reopen investigations based on new leads.
As for the Baier and Hurler cases, it is to be hoped that the public can provide a key to solving these crimes. Witnesses who have information are asked to contact the Kempten police on 0831 9909-1991 or the Fürth police on 0911 2112-3333.
