Advent anniversary in Mannheim: Christmas joy against loneliness!
The Advent season is just around the corner and brings some interesting activities in the Mannheim City Library. The library uses this special time not only for festive offers, but also to strengthen the community and promote togetherness. From December 2nd to 23rd, 2025, it is offering various programs that are primarily aimed at reaching lonely people and integrating them into social life. Mittelrhein-Tageblatt reports that the “Letters Against Loneliness” campaign in cooperation with youngcaritas is a centerpiece of these initiatives.
From December 2nd to 19th, there will be a Christmas mailbox in the central library in the N1 town hall, where you can post your own letters or postcards. These letters are then forwarded to older people who often do not have much contact with the outside world. At a time when social isolation is hitting some older people particularly hard, this campaign could offer a small ray of hope.
Actions that connect
In recent months, contact with friends and family has been restricted for many people. Older people in particular suffer from the strict rules that also apply in retirement and nursing homes. Social isolation is not just a feeling; it has profound effects on health. How Research reports show, it can lead to a range of health problems, including increased morbidity and mortality. Therefore, initiatives aimed at combating loneliness are of great importance.
Another event at the Mannheim City Library is the Christmas swap meet, where festive decorations can be exchanged or browsed from December 2nd to 23rd. This opportunity to interact in the community is seen by many as a valuable opportunity to make new contacts and spread a little Christmas cheer.
Cultural highlights for young and old
In addition to the opportunities for exchange, musical entertainment will also be provided. On December 5th at 5:30 p.m. there will be a singing of Christmas carols in the music library in the Dalberghaus under the direction of singer and choir director Lola Demur. This will certainly be a lovely occasion to revel in the festive spirit together. It is important to register in advance.
The Advent season also offers reading-aloud craft lessons that are specifically aimed at children. Children aged 1 to 3 can have a special experience on December 2nd in Seckenheim, while older children aged 5 to 7 can take part on December 15th in Schönau - registration is also required here.
Overall, the Mannheim City Library will become a place of encounter and togetherness during this Advent season. The various activities invite you to get involved and strengthen the community. Experiences from recent years show how necessary such offers are to combat loneliness and how valuable it is to maintain social contacts. So let's use this Advent to not only exchange gifts, but also to be part of the solution to loneliness! An example campaign from schools shows how easy it can be to achieve a big impact with small gestures.
