Current gas storage level: Germany preparing for winter!

On October 4, 2025, the gas storage facilities in Germany are now at a full level of 76.21%. This means they have fallen by 0.11% compared to the previous day. These figures were published by the Allgäuer Zeitung, which also documented an interesting development over the past few months. The filling level on September 1, 2025 was still at 70.65% and at the beginning of the year it would be over 80% ( Allgäu newspaper ).

As the NDR reports, the current value is around ten percentage points below the average for the years 2017 to 2021. One reason for this could be the colder winters and the high gas consumption by industry and households in the months from November to February. Future storage levels must also legally reach 85% by the end of this month and 95% by November 1st ( NDR ).

History of filling levels

Over the last few months, it can be seen that gas storage has been well filled over the colder summer months, from 39.65% in June and 32.62% in May 2025. Ultimately, the storage facilities were able to cover gas demand throughout the cold winter months. It is estimated that they can get Germany through cold conditions for around two months, provided they are sufficiently filled ( ZDF ).

Nevertheless, the gas supply in Germany remains assessed as stable, which is also due to the fact that peak consumption was recorded in the months of December and January. A decrease in natural gas consumption of 14% compared to the years 2018 to 2021 can be noted. This could also be partly influenced by the increasing use of renewable energy ( Allgäu newspaper ).

Outlook on energy supply

With the federal government, which has now drawn up an emergency plan in the event of a gas shortage, supplies to essential facilities could be ensured. It remains worrying that Russia hardly supplies any gas to Germany anymore and gas imports are mainly based on Norway and the Netherlands. Therefore, the development of gas storage levels also represents a central question for future energy policy. Gas consumption at home remains high, with 56% of German apartments being heated with gas. The increased use of liquid gas in the newly opened terminals could also have a stabilizing effect ( ZDF ).
