Current gas storage level: Germany in winter preparation!

On October 4, 2025, the gas stores in Germany are now at a level of 76.21 %. This means that they have decreased by 0.11 % compared to the previous day. The Allgäuer Zeitung published these figures, which has also documented an interesting development over the past few months. The level on September 1, 2025 was still 70.65 % and at the beginning of the year it would be over 80 % ( Allgäuer Zeitung ).

As the NDR reports, the current value has around ten percentage points below the average of 2017 to 2021. One reason for this could be the colder winter and the high gas consumption of industry and households from November to February. The future storage fillings must also reach 85 % by law by the end of this month and 95 % by November 1 ( NDR ).

History of the filling stands

Over the past few months, it turns out that the gas storage of 39.65 % in June and 32.62 % in May 2025 was well filled over the colder summer months. Ultimately, the memory could cover the gas requirement over cold winter months. It is estimated that they can bring Germany through cold conditions for about two months if they are sufficiently filled ( ZDF ).

Nevertheless, the gas supply in Germany remains stable, which is also related to the fact that the maximum consumption in December and January was recorded. Here, a decline in natural gas consumption by 14 % compared to 2018 to 2021 should be noted. This could also be influenced by the increasing use of renewable energies ( Allgäuer Zeitung ).

Outlook on the energy supply

With the federal government, which has now developed an emergency plan in the event of a gas deficiency, the supply of vital institutions could be ensured. It remains questionable that Russia hardly supplies gas to Germany and that gas imports mainly support themselves on Norway and the Netherlands. Therefore, the development of the gas storage fillings is also a central question for future energy policy. The gas consumption is still high at home, with 56 % of German apartments being heated with gas. The increased use of liquefied gas in the newly opened terminals could also have a stabilizing effect ( ZDF ).
