Nuclear storage facility danger: What experts say about the search for a final storage facility in the region!

A new interim status regarding the search for a final storage facility in the region is causing a lot of discussion: Martin Samain, the deputy director of the Donau-Iller regional association, recently spoke about the current developments. According to the Swabian Some areas in the Alb-Donau district and in the Biberach district have already successfully completed the first two of four test steps. However, only three percent of the country's area is currently available for selection as a possible nuclear storage site.

The geological condition deserves particular attention: While the crystalline rock layer is considered unsuitable in the region - it is usually too deep in the ground - the clay rock, especially the Opalinus Clay, is favored as a stable final storage location. From Günzburg to Riedlingen there is plenty of Opalinus Clay, which puts the region in a promising position. Samain even considers the region's suitability in categories A or B, i.e. “good” or “very good”, to be realistic.

Outlook for the future

The Federal Society for Final Storage (BGE) plans to collect further data by 2026. At the end of 2027, it should be clear which locations are considered good or very suitable. A piece of land in the Alb-Donau district has passed the current test phase, but this does not mean a preliminary decision has been made about the future location.

District Administrator Heiner Scheffold emphasizes that this is just an intermediate step in a long selection process. In Biberach, District Administrator Mario Glaser shares the assessment that the probability of a location in the district is rather low. However, the entire population has so far shown little interest in the search for a final storage facility, despite BGE's efforts to make the topic more transparent.

Participation of the population

Another feature of the search for a final repository is the planned involvement of citizens, which is targeted for 2027. Regional conferences are intended to enable people to actively participate in the process. However, the final decision-making process will ultimately be made by the German Bundestag, with the decision expected by 2050.
