Tourism boom in the Alb-Donau district: 240 million euros in added value!

The current tourism development in the Alb-Donau district is pleasingly stable and scores with high numbers of overnight stays again. The district also expects this positive development to continue in 2025, as District Administrator Heiner Scheffold explained before this year's CMT, the largest tourism trade fair in Stuttgart. According to the projections, the district will record around 590,000 overnight stays towards the end of the year, which is only slightly below the record year of 2024, in which around 598,300 overnight stays were recorded. Overall, tourism generates added value of over 240 million euros, of which around 75 million euros comes from overnight stays.

In the first ten months of 2025, almost 520,000 guests stayed in the Alb-Donau district. Although this represents a decrease of around 7,000 overnight stays compared to the same period last year, the number of overnight stays has increased by over 22 percent over the last ten years. There is also encouraging growth in domestic tourists, while the number of foreign guests is declining slightly. These are developments that are also supported by targeted investments in quality and infrastructure in the area of cycling and hiking tourism.

Creative approaches to increasing attractiveness

The Alb-Donau-Kreis relies on innovative marketing strategies to continue to make its tourist offerings attractive. The tourist highlights will be presented at the CMT, for example, including new flyers and images from 13 participating municipalities. This offensive not only aims to attract new guests, but also to inspire existing visitors with current offers.

The most popular activities in the district are cycling and hiking. The collaboration with cities such as Ehingen, Laichingen, Westerheim and Munderkingen has given additional impetus to regional gastronomy. Ehingen's gastronomy industry will also be represented at the trade fair to present regional specialties. Positive feedback from restaurateurs shows that such events can stimulate the local economy.

Important key figures at a glance

Year Overnight stays Value creation
2025 (estimated) approximately 590,000 over 240 million euros
2024 (record year) approximately 598,300 75 million euros (overnight stays)
Previous year (2023) approximately 527,425

There are also other offers that are specifically tailored to day tourists. It is estimated that around 5.8 million day visitors travel to the region and generate sales of around 165 million euros. These figures underline that tourism not only has an economic dimension, but also significantly increases the quality of life and leisure value for the local population.

In order to promote cycling and hiking, several paths are being certified, including the well-known mountain beer tour and the Württemberg Valley Cycle Path. In total, guests in the Alb-Donau district can access seven ADFC-certified cycle paths and ten hiking trails that have been awarded awards by the German Hiking Association.

With all of these efforts, the Alb-Donau district is helping to position the region as an attractive travel destination. The tourism sector is experiencing change, and the commitment of communities, restaurants and interested guests shows that the way forward is promising. The next steps will be discussed at the CMT in Stuttgart, where the Alb-Donau-Kreis will again have a strong presence in 2025 in order to attract new visitors and inspire old acquaintances.
