Sonya Yoncheva enchants as Norma in the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden!

On August 24, 2025 at 5 p.m., the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden will be the venue for a very special musical event: the performance of Bellini's famous opera “Norma”. The top-class soloist Sonya Yoncheva, who has already sung her way immortally into the hearts of the audience at the Metropolitan Opera, will take on the title role. Critics describe her performance as “captivating” and “mystical.” In the role of the druid priestess, Yoncheva shows a mixture of animalistic intensity and noble grace and is completely convincing. This is reported by Kultur Freak.

Musically, the performance will be directed by Domingo Hindoyan, an accomplished conductor who currently serves as principal conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and has also made a name for himself as music director-designate of the Los Angeles Opera. The Gstaad Festival Orchestra, which already performed successfully with Puccini's “Tosca” in Baden-Baden in 2023, will play at his side. The Bern Theater Choir will complement the ensemble.

About the opera “Norma”

First performed in 1831, “Norma” is considered Bellini’s masterpiece and one of the most important operas of Italian Romanticism. The story revolves around the conflict between Norma's public role as a druid priestess and her personal feelings, which put her in a desperate position. She is the lover of the Roman general Pollione, with whom she has two children - a double life that is in danger of being exposed.

The emotional depth is particularly evident in the famous aria “Casta Diva”, which will captivate the audience. Critics have praised Yoncheva's performance in this scene as a tender plea for peace, and her interpretation is highlighted as a standout musical moment. The nuances of her voice are also described as “plush” and “velvety” – a delight for every opera lover. Sonya Yoncheva will play the role of Norma, a young woman who is emotionally on the verge of collapse and captivates the audience with her fascinating presence.

A strong ensemble

In addition to Sonya Yoncheva, tenor Stefan Pop will also interpret the role of Pollione. Pop, winner of several competitions, has established himself on international opera stages and will represent another mainstay of the ensemble. Along with Yoncheva, the chemistry between these two actors could be crucial to the overall impact of the performance.

The Festspielhaus Baden-Baden promises an evening full of passion, drama and musical flights of fancy. Opera fans can look forward to an unforgettable evening where Norma's challenges and conflicts come to life on a large stage.
