Beavers defy setback: Positive season balance despite defeat

On September 2nd, 2025 it was that time again: The Biberach Beavers played in the last game of the German Football League 2 (GFL2) South against the Fursty Razorbacks from Fürstenfeldbruck. The Beavers had lost the first leg 25-15, and hopes were high that they could show a better performance in the second leg. But despite a fighting performance, the Beavers had to admit defeat again and ended the season in fifth place with a record of 4:6.

In the second leg, the first half was a mirror image of the first leg: both teams initially couldn't find their way into the game and the first points only fell after the half-time break. Fullback Maximilian Kopp from the Razorbacks broke through and scored the first touchdown, giving the hosts the lead. But the Beavers didn't let themselves get down and immediately responded with a touchdown from receiver Michael Burdick, which leveled the score at 7:7. In the final quarter, however, the Razorbacks countered decisively and scored again with touchdowns from Anthony Walker and Andreas Berger, which set the final score at 22:7. Despite the defeat, the Razorbacks only remained in second-to-last place in the table, reports the Schwäbische Zeitung.

A look at the season

Andreas Ortlieb, Beavers department head, took a positive view of the situation. He emphasized that the team had to compensate for many injured regular players this season, which only added to the challenges. The focus is now on next season, with the clear goal of building a competitive team and fighting for promotion. There is no reason to bury your head in the sand - the setback is often followed by an upswing.

The GFL, in which the Beavers play, was founded in 1999 and is considered the highest league for American football in Germany. Before the GFL was founded, the best German teams played in the 1st Bundesliga, with the first football team, the Frankfurter Löwen, making their debut in 1977. The league has enjoyed many great successes and grown significantly since then, as Sports Illustrated details.

Statistics and future prospects

One of the most exciting aspects of American football in Germany is the constant development of the teams and their performance. In the GFL, many teams strive to win the championship - a goal that the Beavers would also like to pursue in the coming season. The New York Lions Braunschweig are the most successful team in the GFL with twelve championships, followed by the Düsseldorf Panthers and the Berlin Adlers, who have each won six titles.

team Championships
New York Lions Braunschweig 12
Düsseldorf Panthers 6
Berlin Adler 6
Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns 5

Going forward, it will be crucial for the Beavers to learn from last season's mistakes and develop new strategies. With fresh enthusiasm and a clear goal in mind, the fans are looking forward to the new season, in which promotion can perhaps be achieved. The pressures and challenges of last season could prove to be the impetus needed to bring the team back stronger.
