Traditional Mäschle bakery closes: 50 employees lose jobs!
There is sad news in the region: The traditional bakery Konditorei Mäschle GmbH & Co. KG has announced that it will be ceasing its business operations at the end of the month. This decision is the result of economic difficulties that led to the company's bankruptcy. In a statement, the Ravensburg District Court stated that insolvency proceedings were opened on October 1, 2025 due to insolvency and excessive indebtedness. Attorney Michael Wahl from Pluta Rechtsanwalts GmbH was appointed as insolvency administrator.
The bakery, which once had a proud branch network of 15 locations, was reduced to just 6 branches after changing its name to a GmbH. The branch in Ehingen had to be closed in January 2025, and liquidity problems arose again in August. The high running costs continued to put a strain on the company, which ultimately led to the company continuing to make losses despite the ongoing bankruptcy filing.
fate of the employees
The bankruptcy has a direct impact on the bakery's approximately 50 employees: On Tuesday they were informed of impending layoffs. At a meeting, creditors unanimously agreed to close the five remaining branches. These will remain open until Friday, October 31st, before the doors finally close. It was announced that around 50 creditors are expected in the insolvency proceedings.
A look at the bankruptcy statistics
This closure is part of a worrying development in Germany. According to the Institute for SME Research, a total of 21,812 companies filed for bankruptcy in 2024, an increase of 22.4% compared to the previous year. This is due not only to current crises, but also to previous ones, which have placed a heavy burden on the economic environment. A closer look shows that more than 23,000 formerly self-employed people also filed for bankruptcy due to their debts.
In total, around 270,000 commercial companies and an estimated 90,000 freelance jobs were discontinued in 2024. This is a warning sign considering that bankruptcies are due to current market developments. In fact, the number of insolvencies among companies that have been active on the market for several years is increasing, which indicates an intensifying competitive situation.
The closure of the Mäschle Bakery is not only a loss for the employees, but also for the local community, which has a long history associated with this business. Many people have enjoyed the fresh rolls and cakes over the years. The hope for an investor solution that could enable a takeover proved unsuccessful as no market participant showed interest.
The fate of the Mäschle bakery reflects the challenges that many companies face. As statistics show, insolvency is a rare form of company closure, but it remains a serious issue that affects us all. A good reason to be vigilant and keep a close eye on developments in the economy.
