Residents' meeting in Überlingen: Important topics for the future!

A lot will happen in Überlingen in the coming years. The city administration has put important issues on the table that will be discussed at an upcoming residents' meeting. Again South Courier reports, the gradual introduction of all-day care at primary schools is at the top of the agenda for the 2026/27 school year. This will be a significant step for families in the region.

The residents' meeting, which is scheduled to take place in November, will not only address this point, but also the continuation of the Integrated Urban Development Program (ISEK). Another important topic is the realignment of the area of integration. These points were considered important by the city administration and were approved by the local council, which gave the formal order for the meeting.

What can citizens expect?

The purpose of such residents' meetings is to promote direct communication between citizens and the city administration. Citizens' suggestions are taken into account, but no decisions are made during the meeting. Two points that were discussed in the committee affect the agenda: Should the “Miscellaneous” item be placed at the beginning, and should migration be given its own agenda item? Both proposals did not receive the approval of the majority in the local council.

A request from Thorsten Peters (AfD) for information about the effects of the settlement of migrants in the last decade was particularly controversial. The application was rejected, whereupon even Peters' party colleague Roth abstained. It is clear here that the topic of migration is treated in a complex and sensitive manner in the local council. Franz Dichgans (CDU) noted that the issue does not fall within the municipal sphere of influence and requires a different approach.

Integrated urban development in focus

A key aspect of urban development is the integrated approach, which has been gaining in importance in Germany for several years. Urban development funding in particular plays a major role. For example, in 2023, the Karlsruhe municipal council initiated the development of an integrated urban development concept (ISEK) for 2040, which serves as an orientation and action framework for future developments. This challenge is addressed by the term “integrated urban development”, which encourages effective urban design with the involvement of all relevant actors and citizens. Karlsruhe has planned a lot here and shows how important good planning is.

This concept is accompanied by numerous citizen participation processes - a step that, according to a study on integrated development in German municipalities, is of great importance. The discussions about resource-sensitive, sustainable strategies and the associated cooperation between various offices and departments are crucial for the success of such projects. BBSR emphasizes that integration is becoming en vogue for all stakeholders and should, above all, benefit citizens.

The coming weeks will show where Überlingen will develop with these new initiatives. It is an exciting time for citizens who are directly involved in the urban development process and can voice their concerns. The residents' meeting will certainly be an important place for discussions and new impulses.
