Böblingen indoor swimming pool is falling apart: daycare center needs renovation and is waiting for a new building!
In Böblingen, residents are eagerly awaiting news about the long-announced new daycare center (Kita) on Galgenberg. The situation surrounding the abandoned indoor swimming pool raises questions, especially since the pool has been closed for over ten years.
Originally, a comprehensive new building project for a modern daycare center and a new gymnasium was planned. But this plan is currently on hold. The city administration has postponed the project due to other, higher priority construction projects. The original project was classified as a low priority because the construction costs were considered too high in relation to the possible new spaces. The neighboring daycare center at Galgenbergstrasse 33 is currently being renovated, which will cost a total of 100,000 euros.
Current renovation measures
The daycare center, which has existed since 1954, is currently being extensively renovated. The renovation includes the facade and parts of the roof, which were carried out as part of previous renovations to the floor and bathroom fittings. In recent years, the demand for childcare places in the city has grown steadily. The “Kita Offensive” expansion program began in 2018 in order to meet increasing needs. Originally, 500 additional places were planned, but the target is now around 760.
The need for childcare places in Böblingen has increased rapidly in the last few years alone, which also forces the city administration to continually examine new projects. Other daycare centers in the area have been renovated and new facilities are already being planned. The Breslauer Straße daycare center, which will offer 110 places, is also attracting the interest of many families.
The indoor swimming pool: a place with history
The indoor swimming pool itself, which was once a popular meeting point for children and clubs, is now showing clear signs of decay. It appears unused with an abandoned 25 meter pool and empty changing rooms. A striking fish mosaic on the wall remains a nostalgic relic that reminds many Böblingen residents of their swimming days. The gymnasium on the upper floor is still actively used by the Ludwig Uhland Elementary School.
The city has invested a lot in creating new childcare places in recent years. In fact, the several renovated daycare centers, together with the new plans, have enabled a remarkable increase in childcare places. Despite this progress, the shortage of skilled workers in the educational sector remains a challenge that the city also has to overcome.
The queue for a new daycare center on Galgenberg continues to drag on. The hope remains that there will be news soon that will advance plans to revitalize the area. The citizens of Böblingen can stay excited about the promised family offer, which they could soon take advantage of.
