Halloween in the Böblingen district: Why we love black cats!

Today, October 31, 2025, everything revolves around Halloween in many cities. Not only does this festival have a dark, mystical side, but it also promotes awareness about the adoptability of certain animals. Black cats in particular are in the spotlight this year, and not without reason. In the past, they have often been associated with superstition and witches, which leads many people to have prejudices against these animals. Stuttgarter Nachrichten reports that black cats are often viewed as harbingers of bad luck, which makes finding them in animal shelters much more difficult.

To counteract this, preventative steps have been taken in some regions, such as the city of Terrassa in Catalonia. It was decided there that no more black cats would be rehomed until November 1st in order to protect them from potential abuse during the Halloween hustle and bustle. The city administration responded to clear warnings from animal protection organizations and concerned citizens. Deputy Mayor Noel Duque explained that in recent years in particular, there has been an increase in suspicious requests to adopt black cats, often without interest in long-term homes. The city would like to make it clear: animals are not fashion accessories!

Protective measures in Böblingen

In the Böblingen district, people look at the situation a little more calmly. There are currently no comparable protective measures for black cats here. The local animal shelter gives the all-clear that there is no immediate danger to the cats. Nevertheless, it is suggested that Halloween could also be an excellent opportunity to adopt a black cat. The animal shelter hopes that many people will leave their prejudices about black cats behind and give the animals a chance at a loving home.

Those responsible emphasize how important it is not to act impulsively, but to think carefully about whether you can offer your new cat a species-appropriate and safe home. The care conditions must be optimal to enable the animals to live a happy life. Responsible adoption of animals is particularly important at this time, when superstitions and macabre customs are increasingly on the rise again.

A call for adoption

The German Animal Welfare Association found in 2020 that black cats are considered difficult to adopt. However, such campaigns around Halloween could change prejudices against these wonderful animals. Let's do our best to free them from their misfortune and give them a new home.

There are also international initiatives that commemorate the fate of black cats. Not only does it point out the dangers, but also the importance of showing love and affection for animals, regardless of their color. This could also make a nice statement for many animal lovers on Halloween evening.
