Maichingen is planning a new rescue center: the fire department needs more space!
A lot is happening in Maichingen, and that can be clearly felt on Kirchturmstrasse. A new rescue center for the fire department and the German Red Cross (DRK) is just around the corner! The Sindelfingen city administration has specifically identified a promising location in the central, western area of Berliner Straße. This space is almost free of restrictions and offers sufficient space for possible future expansion, thanks to the ever-increasing requirements shown by the fire department needs plan updated in 2023. One thing is certain: the old station in the center of the town has reached its limits and cannot be expanded due to the size of the property. This project could therefore be a great service not only to the firefighters, but to the entire community.
What has happened so far? A total of 13 potential locations were meticulously examined. Unfortunately, most of them could not be sent into the race for various reasons. For example, the location on Allmendweg was reserved for a Kolping Educational Center school. Areas around the Allmendstadion were also not suitable, as the need for sports areas and the requirements of the regional plan took priority. In addition, areas in the Maichingen industrial and commercial area were classified as unsuitable, primarily due to orchards and protected areas. The locations at the “Maichingen Nord” S-Bahn stop failed due to a lack of accessibility and operating times. Last but not least, areas west of Berliner Strasse were also rejected due to restrictions and property conditions.
The path to the new guard
What's next? The Technical and Environmental Committee has instructed the administration to tackle the necessary changes or the new version of the land use and development plan. Land acquisition for some of the future areas at the planned location is also necessary as they are not yet part of the municipality's property. It will be interesting to see how quickly progress can be made here.
In addition, the fire station department in Maichingen including the youth fire department will be relocated to a new building, which can be seen as a further step towards modern and improved infrastructure. The new locations are strategically located on arable and green areas below the roundabout, with access to Döffingen-Darmsheim. The ever-growing demands of the fire department not only require new building planning, but also a far-sighted investment in the future of the emergency services.
The fire brigade requirements plan itself not only deals with the question of where new or additional locations are needed. It also assesses the required vehicle inventory and provides a solid basis for fire service planning in municipalities. Even without legal requirements, fire service requirement plans are of great value and enable the financial impact of various solutions to be realistically assessed, which is essential in times of tight budgets. A legal basis for this planning security was created in Rhineland-Palatinate in 2020.
The developments in Maichingen are not only a significant step for the local fire department, but also a signal for the entire region that we have a good hand for the security infrastructure here.
