Poignant reading in Fischbach: Ralf Siegenühr talks about Kunduz
There is a lot to report today in the cozy museum café in Fischbach. The former soldier Ralf Siegenühr read from his impressive book, “127 days, deployment in Kunduz”. Again Black Forest messenger reported that the reading was a complete success, organized by Irmgard Klee, the deputy chairwoman of the Niedereschach History and Local History Association. Many interested listeners came to listen to the author's personal experiences.
But what makes the reading so special? A central topic was the question and discussion session that followed, in which the visitors discussed lively the deployment of international troops in Afghanistan. What was particularly interesting was how the time after the withdrawal in August 2021 changed the perception of the operation. Siegenühr, who originally wrote his diary notes only for his family, wanted to share the physical and psychological stress that soldiers endure during their deployments with a wider audience.
First-hand insights
During his reading, Siegenühr highlighted several crucial passages. For example, the journey to Afghanistan, which did not take place with a Bundeswehr machine as expected, but with an Uzbek machine. This was just the beginning of his impressive and often challenging experiences as a platoon leader in the ISAF mission in 2009.
Another exciting chapter of his reading deals with the first patrol missions. The inadequate material equipment - especially the lack of night vision devices - was a constant companion. But it was a firefight in which Siegenühr, as a platoon commander, made decisions that could prevent something worse from happening, the most impressive example of his experiences.
The reading moved the audience and stimulated thought. Attendees appreciated gaining insight into the often little-discussed challenges soldiers face in such extreme situations.
About sport and passion
Such personal and sporting memories ensure that you connect outside of your own experiences and talk to others about your own likes and dislikes. This interplay of experiences from different areas of life makes people approachable and shows the diversity of their stories.
The afternoon is rounded off with conversations about everyday life and perhaps also technical topics, such as the 1994 Chevy Silverado 1500 pickup, which was recently discussed in the forum. The many facets that life offers are reflected in the stories and conversations of the participants who gathered in Fischbach.
