Major operation in Basel: Stuttgart fans under control – pyrotechnics secured!

There was a lot going on in Basel yesterday when the Basel-Stadt cantonal police, together with the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG), carried out a large-scale operation at the Weil am Rhein motorway customs office. The aim was to inspect ten coaches and one minibus that transported a total of 563 Stuttgart football fans. The police not only seized masking material and mouth guards, but also quartz sand gloves, a knife and pyrotechnics. The fans who were checked were released after the check, but the dynamic of the day extended far beyond the checks [verlagshaus-jaumann.de].

Around 4,500 to 5,000 Stuttgart supporters became active in Basel's city center and started a fan march towards St. Jakob-Park at 6:45 p.m. Fortunately, this protest march remained peaceful. Interestingly, at the same time, an unauthorized pro-Palestine rally with around 700 participants took place at Barfüsserplatz from 6:30 p.m. This demonstration also moved through the city center towards Kleinbasel and caused some excitement.

Riot and order

The police had their hands full, especially when some windows of a coffee house near Claraplatz were sprayed and fireworks were set off at the Clara police station. In a preventative measure, the police prevented a supposedly planned blockade at the Badischer Bahnhof, which led to Deutsche Bahn train services being briefly suspended before the rally broke up around 9 p.m.

After the game, however, there were problems elsewhere: Due to immigration controls, some away fans were unable to return as planned. In order to help the affected football enthusiasts, the cantonal police organized short-term accommodation and food in an exhibition hall for around 500 fans. This was necessary because some bus drivers were unable to keep their rest times, which made the return journey even more difficult. The comprehensive controls and the spontaneous accommodation show once again that the security precautions in the run-up to major events are particularly high, as swissinfo.ch reports.
