New contact person for volunteers: Damaris Rakoczy active in Nagold!

Something is happening in the area of hospice support in Nagold: Damaris Rakoczy took up her new position at the Diakonieverband Northern Schwarzwald in mid-June 2025. She acts as the first point of contact for those who would like to volunteer their time. In her previous role as a nurse and deputy nursing manager, she brings valuable experience that she now wants to incorporate into hospice work. Again Black Forest messenger highlights, she encourages those interested to contact her directly, as volunteering is an enriching task.

The topic of “hospice” often brings with it fears, especially when it comes to death. Rakoczy sees it as important to establish contact with those affected and their relatives at an early stage. This could help reduce fears and create understanding. The later involvement in the hospice does not only have to begin during the dying phase; the support process can start much earlier. Anke Stickel, team leader of the hospice team, is aimed at all groups within society - regardless of whether they are pensioners, active professionals or younger people.

Training for hospice caregivers

In order to prepare for this important task, the Diakonieverband offers comprehensive training. Those interested can take part in a six-month course consisting of over 100 units. The course covers, among other things, communication, spirituality and personal attitudes towards dying and grief, as described on the website Hospice circle is described. A basic course serves as orientation, followed by an advanced course that deals more intensively with topics such as palliative care, grief management and the ethical questions of hospice work.

Preparing for volunteer work not only offers an opportunity for personal development, but also an exchange with experienced coordinators and a supportive team. In this regard, Diakonie emphasizes that no care tasks are required; the focus is on presence, listening and emotional support. The times volunteers gather for training and practice vary and could range from evenings to weekends to allow as many people as possible to participate.

Information event in September

From September 2025, information events will take place in the Burgcenter of the Nagold community center to provide a more in-depth insight into hospice work. The current goal is to build a dedicated team of 10 to 15 volunteers, with four people already signed up. Anyone interested in the training can contact Damaris Rakoczy by phone on 07453/841029 or 0151/70612630 or send an email to d.rakoczy@diakonie-nsw.de.

Hospice care is very popular and offers significant support for people in an important phase of life. It remains to be seen how many committed people will join this important volunteer position to give time and be there for each other.
