Icy New Year's Eve swimming: 50 brave people brave Lake Constance!
On December 28, 2025, the long-awaited New Year's Eve swim in Lake Constance took place in Konstanz, organized by the DLRG Konstanz local group. This popular event made its comeback after being unable to take place in previous years due to the coronavirus pandemic and financial challenges. A good 50 courageous swimmers braved the icy temperatures to complete the traditional route of around 900 meters from the port of Konstanz to the Rhine lido. The air temperature was around freezing point, while the water also posed an adventurous challenge at around five degrees Celsius.
What was particularly exciting was that 47 participants lined up in swimming fins and neoprene suits to conquer the cool water. An additional highlight were the torches that the swimmers held during their competition. This tradition, which was started by a small DLRG group in the 1950s, has developed over the years into a popular spectacle that brings together participants from all over southern Germany. Some even brought original items such as a cheese fondue on a raft, which further enhanced the convivial atmosphere.
Sense of community and team moments
New Year's Eve swimming not only offers the opportunity to exercise, but also to make new friends and experience team moments. The event primarily attracts swimmers who must be at least 16 years old. Although the number of participants was limited to 80 to 150, all places were quickly filled. A good reason for those interested to register in good time via the DLRG website. The anticipation of this sporting challenge, coupled with culinary offerings and a warm community, makes New Year's Eve swimming an unforgettable experience.
Overall, the event provides great joy and motivation to get sporty at the turn of the year. The DLRG Konstanz local group has once again proven that it has a good knack for organizing such events. Despite the cold, numerous swimmers came together to celebrate the (almost) last day of the year together. We hope that many participants will take part in this tradition again next year.
