In the last few days, the case of Christian B., which came into the public eye in connection with the disappearance of little Madeleine McCann, has once again caused a stir. The 48-year-old, who is currently serving a sentence for sexual violence, applied for an early release from prison and recently paid a fine that will bring forward his release by several months. This was reported by the PZ News.
Christian B. is suspected of murder in the case of the disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann, who disappeared in Portugal in 2007 and has been unsolved for over 18 years. He is currently in prison after being convicted of raping a 72-year-old American woman in 2019. In October 2024, however, he was acquitted of further allegations in another trial, which fueled speculation about his legal disputes. Nevertheless, he remains under the shadow of suspicion of murder and has not yet been charged, which maintains the striking presumption of innocence Daily Mirror reported.
Early release possible
The Braunschweig public prosecutor's office has confirmed the payment of an outstanding fine of around 1,450 euros, which was transferred by a former BKA employee. However, she described the transfer as a “misunderstanding” and assumed that it compensated for the punishment for an insult against a prison employee, but not for bodily harm. Christian B's release from prison could now be brought forward from the originally set date of January 6, 2026 to September 17, 2025.
The application for early release is currently being examined by the Hildesheim Regional Court. Since these proceedings are not public, it remains to be seen when a decision will be made. The public prosecutor's office states that no timely decision is currently expected, which further increases the uncertainty surrounding Christian B's legal situation.
Crime situation in Germany
The situation remains tense, especially for the investigators, who have to face Christian B's further escape abroad, which could make his possible summons and legal responsibility much more difficult.
