Plochingen: Cycle highway gains speed with new bridge!
In the idyllic region between Plochingen and Göppingen there is fresh news for all cycling lovers and commuters. The Filstal cycle highway recently took an important step forward. A new 800 meter long section of the Cycle Highway 14 (RS 14) has been inaugurated, providing momentum for the local cycling infrastructure. Transport Minister Winfried Hermann and other celebrities celebrated this opening with a joint trip. This measure is intended not only to make mobility easier for citizens, but also to provide an incentive to leave the car at home more often and switch to cycling. Stuttgarter Nachrichten reports positive reactions from supporters of this project.
The new route extends from the end of the demonstration section in Reichenbach, which was built in 2021, to the B10 ramp. This creates a fast connection that is intended for very different user groups, but especially for commuters who travel to work every day. Radschnellweg Filstal highlights that up to 2,000 cyclists are expected on this section every day. This is good news for the transport transition and the promotion of cycling in the region.
A strong signal for the transport transition
The opening was accompanied on site by creative floor markings from the RadKULTUR initiative, which further brightened up the event. Experienced mechanics offered free bike checks to ensure visitors' bikes were roadworthy. This shows how important the expansion of the bicycle infrastructure is not only for mobility, but also for the safety of cyclists.
However, the challenges in Plochingen have not yet been completely overcome. Even though a new bridge over the Fils has now been inaugurated, planning for the section of the cycle highway there is still in full swing. A solution that ensures a seamless connection should be found by autumn 2025. Radschnellweg Filstal has already taken a lot of action to advance the project.
Cycle highways – a concept for the future
The importance of cycle highways has increased significantly in recent years. They offer a fast and safe connection for everyday cycling and are intended to help relieve the burden on motorized traffic. The Mobility Forum lists criteria that are crucial for planning such routes: at least 2,000 cyclists per working day, high quality standards in execution and clear integration into the existing cycling network.
With an investment of around 3.9 million euros for the new section, with the federal government covering around 75 percent of the costs, the course has been set for sustainable mobility in the region. Transport Minister Hermann has the vision of making around 20 percent of trips in Baden-Württemberg by bicycle by 2030, which represents a clear challenge for the coming years.
Overall, the constant further development of the RS 14 cycle highway represents an important building block in the transport transition. It will be interesting to see what ideas and solutions the planners still have in store for the Plochingen section, because one thing is certain: cyclists in the region are looking forward to a future in which cycling is becoming increasingly important.
